Magic ring crochet: start and close the center

Make an adjustable loop, crochet into the loop and over its tail, then pull the tail to close the center. The starting chain does not count in this single-crochet exercise.

Step 1 Cross the working yarn over the tail to form a loose ring. Pinch the crossing with your yarn hand. Leave a tail of about 15 cm (6 in): enough to pull the ring closed and weave in.

  2. Step 2 Pass the hook through the ring from front to back. Catch the working yarn and draw a loop through the ring.
  3. 1 loop on the hook
Step 3 Yarn over and pull through the loop on the hook to make a securing chain. Keep the ring itself open.

Step 4 Insert the hook through the center and under the tail. Make 6 single crochets around both strands. Put a removable marker in the first single crochet.
  5. 1 loop on the hook
Step 5 Hold the stitches and pull the tail gently until the center closes. Stop if the yarn catches; check that the tail runs freely through every stitch.
What it looks like A closed center with the first round of stitches around it; the rounds grow outward.

Hook in your right hand; guide the working yarn with your left hand. The loop counts stay the same.

TailWorking yarn
  1. Insert through the ring and catch the working yarn.
  2. Draw a loop back through; chain 1 to secure.
  3. Make 6 sc around the ring strand and tail together, then pull the free tail.
The crossing stays loose until stitches are in place. The tail and ring strand must be enclosed by each sc so the tail can slide and close the center. Keep the working yarn available to make stitches; do not use the tail as the working strand.

Check the first round

Count 6 top Vs. The securing chain, active loop and marker are not stitches. The tail should close the center without pulling a stitch out.

For a spiral, work the next stitch into the marked single crochet and move the marker into the new first stitch. For joined rounds, slip stitch to the first single crochet, then follow the next round’s starting-chain rule. Do not count the joining slip stitch unless instructed.

If the center will not close

If you worked through the individual loop strands instead of around them, undo the first round and remake it. If only some stitches move, inspect the place where the tail stops sliding.

If the yarn breaks or catches under gentle tension, use a small chain ring instead. A chain ring leaves a center opening. A closed ring still needs its tail woven securely through the backs of stitches in changing directions. Do not trim it at the center.
