Know these stitches: magic ring, puff stitch, chain, single crochet, slip stitch
Materials and yarn planning
Yarns we’ve reviewed that suit it: Bernat Softee Cotton yarn, Lion Brand 24/7 Cotton DK yarn. For the hook, choose by size and handle.
Yarn estimate: one pad is 24 puffs at about 12 cm of light cotton each and 48 single crochets at about 3 cm, about 5 m, so the set of 7 takes about 35 m: one 50 g ball of cotton.
To buy for a set, make one complete motif first and weigh it: multiply by the number you need, add a little for joins and finishing, and divide by the ball weight on the label. A rectangular swatch cannot predict yarn for this shape. With a total length instead, the yarn-length-to-balls calculator gives the ball count.
Finished size and gauge
Each pad is about 7 cm across in light cotton. The edge round sets the size: 48 single crochets at about 20 per 10 cm make about 24 cm around. For a larger pad, use medium (category 4) cotton and a 5 mm hook. These are calculations from the counts, not a measured sample.
The gauge calculator compares your swatch with the pattern. A stitch name you do not know is in the abbreviation chart; a UK pattern’s names are in the US/UK term reference.
The pattern
Count rows for this patternOne pad
- Round 1: make a magic ring. Chain 2 (it does not count), then [puff in the ring, chain 1] 8 times. Pull the ring closed and join with a slip stitch to the top of the first puff: 8 puffs and 8 spaces. Close each puff with its own chain 1, as in the puff stitch lesson; the chain 1 after it makes the space.
- Round 2: slip stitch into the first space. Chain 2, then [puff, chain 1, puff, chain 1] in each space around, join to the first puff: 16 puffs and 16 spaces.
- Round 3, the edge: chain 1, [single crochet in the top of the next puff, 2 single crochets in the next space] 16 times, join to the first single crochet: 48 stitches. Fasten off and weave in the ends.
The set
- Make 6 more the same way, in one color or several.
- Wet a pad, use it with your cleanser and rinse it out. Let the pads dry flat and wash them with your towels.
Check the work
Round 1 has 8 puffs; Round 2 puts two in each of the 8 spaces, 16; the edge has three stitches for each puff and its space, 48.
- If the pad cups like a bowl, the edge is tight: work Round 3 with a hook 0.5 mm larger.
- If it ruffles, the edge has too many stitches for your puffs: work 1 single crochet in each space instead of 2.
- If a puff comes undone in the wash, the closing chain was skipped: close every puff with its chain 1.
