Crochet bottle bag: a mesh gift bag for New Year’s Eve

Make a flat base as wide as the bottle, turn the sides up on a back-loop round of 44, work 36 rounds of mesh and 2 solid rounds, then thread a chain cord through the mesh and tie it round the neck.

Materials and yarn planning

Yarns we’ve reviewed that suit it: Knit Picks Dishie Cone yarn, Lion Brand 24/7 Cotton worsted yarn, Paintbox Yarns Cotton Aran. For the hook, choose by size and handle.

Yarn estimate: the bag’s 1,884 stitches and chains come to about 56 m of medium cotton, one 100 g ball, and the cord to about 4 m of gold.

This pattern has about 2,123 stitches in the bag and the cord. For a closer figure in your own yarn, weigh what you have made once a good part is done, divide by the stitches made so far, multiply by 2,123 and divide by the ball weight on the label. Taller stitches use more yarn than short ones, so allow a margin.

Finished size and gauge

Measure round your bottle at its widest, and its height. The example is a bottle 28 cm round and 30 cm tall. At 14 single crochets and 16 rounds per 10 cm, the base needs 28 × 1.4 = 39.2 stitches, rounded to the nearest multiple of 6: 42, in 7 rounds, 30 cm round, a little wider than the bottle. The back-loop round adds 2 to make 44. The mesh has one space for every 2 stitches, and the cord needs an even number of spaces, here 22, so that both its ends come out on the outside. If your base is already a multiple of 4, work that round without increases. The 36 mesh rounds and the top make the bag about 24 cm tall, so the cord closes it round the neck. These are calculations from the counts, not a measured sample.

The gauge calculator compares your swatch with the pattern. A stitch name you do not know is in the abbreviation chart; a UK pattern’s names are in the US/UK term reference.

Base

  1. Round 1: make a magic ring, chain 1 and work 6 single crochets in it. Pull the ring closed and join with a slip stitch to the first single crochet (6 stitches).
  2. Round 2: chain 1 (it does not count), 2 single crochets in each stitch, join (12 stitches).
  3. Round 3: chain 1, [single crochet in the next stitch, 2 single crochets in the next stitch] 6 times, join (18 stitches).
  4. Round 4: chain 1, [single crochet in the next 2 stitches, 2 single crochets in the next stitch] 6 times, join (24 stitches).
  5. Round 5: chain 1, [single crochet in the next 3 stitches, 2 single crochets in the next stitch] 6 times, join (30 stitches).
  6. Round 6: chain 1, [single crochet in the next 4 stitches, 2 single crochets in the next stitch] 6 times, join (36 stitches).
  7. Round 7: chain 1, [single crochet in the next 5 stitches, 2 single crochets in the next stitch] 6 times, join (42 stitches).
  8. Stand the bottle on the base: it should be a little wider than the bottle all round. If it is smaller, work one more round, adding 6.

Sides

  1. Round 8: chain 1, working in the back loops only, [single crochet in the next 20 stitches, 2 single crochets in the next stitch] 2 times, join (44 stitches). The free front loops make a ridge, and the sides turn up from it.
  2. Round 9: chain 1, [single crochet in the next stitch, chain 1, skip the next stitch] 22 times, join to the first single crochet: 22 single crochets and 22 chain spaces.
  3. Rounds 10–44: slip stitch in the first chain space, chain 1, [single crochet in the chain space, chain 1, skip the next single crochet] 22 times, join: 22 chain spaces. Slide the bottle in after a few rounds: the mesh should hug it without pulling open.
  4. Rounds 45–46: chain 1, single crochet in each single crochet and in each chain space, join (44 stitches). Fasten off and weave in the ends.

Cord

  1. In gold, chain 120, about 70 cm. Slip stitch in the back bump of the second chain from the hook and of each chain back: 119 slip stitches. Fasten off and knot each end.
  2. Starting on the outside, thread the cord in and out through the 22 spaces of Round 43, so both ends come out on the outside, side by side.
  3. If the bottle has been in the fridge, wipe it dry before it goes in: cold glass gathers water, and cotton soaks it up. Slide the bottle in, pull the cord to close the bag round the neck and tie a bow.

Check the work

The base grows by 6 a round to 42. The back-loop round adds 2: 44, a multiple of 4. Each mesh round has 22 single crochets and 22 chain spaces, 44 in all, and 22 is even, so the cord ends come out together.

Single crochets by round in the base, then stitches and chain spaces round the sides6 · 12 · 18 · 24 · 30 · 36 · 42 · 44
  • If the base cups, a round is missing increases: count 6 more each round. If it ruffles, a round has too many.
  • If the mesh twists as it grows, start every round in the first chain space after the join.
  • If the bag is loose on the bottle, start again with a base one round smaller, or work the mesh with a hook one size smaller.
