Know these stitches: magic ring, double crochet
Materials and yarn planning
Yarns we’ve reviewed that suit it: Bernat Softee Cotton yarn, Knit Picks Dishie Cone yarn, Lion Brand 24/7 Cotton DK yarn. For the hook, choose by size and handle.
To buy for a set, make one complete motif first and weigh it: multiply by the number you need, add a little for joins and finishing, and divide by the ball weight on the label. A rectangular swatch cannot predict yarn for this shape. With a total length instead, the yarn-length-to-balls calculator gives the ball count.
Finished size and gauge
The straight edge is the half circle's full width: two row heights for every row. With R double-crochet rows per 10 cm, 6 rows make it about 12 × 10 ÷ R cm long and half that tall. Example: at 8 rows per 10 cm, about 15 cm by 7.5 cm. These are calculations from the counts, not a measured sample.
The gauge calculator compares your swatch with the pattern. A stitch name you do not know is in the abbreviation chart; a UK pattern’s names are in the US/UK term reference.
The pattern
Count rows for this patternStart from a ring
- Row 1: make a magic ring. Chain 3 (it counts as a double crochet) and work 5 double crochets in the ring: 6 stitches. Pull the tail to close the ring. Do not join.
- Row 2: chain 3 and turn; it counts as a double crochet. Work 1 double crochet in the first stitch, then 2 double crochets in each stitch across, the last 2 in the top of the chain 3: 12 stitches.
Add 6 stitches a row
- Row 3: chain 3 and turn. 2 double crochets in the next stitch, then [1 double crochet in the next stitch, 2 double crochets in the next stitch] 5 times, the last 2 in the top of the chain 3: 18 stitches.
- Row 4: chain 3 and turn. 2 double crochets in the next stitch, 1 double crochet in the next stitch, then [1 double crochet in the next stitch, 2 double crochets in the next stitch, 1 double crochet in the next stitch] 5 times: 24 stitches.
- Row 5: chain 3 and turn. 1 double crochet in each of the next 2 stitches, 2 double crochets in the next stitch, then [1 double crochet in each of the next 3 stitches, 2 double crochets in the next stitch] 5 times: 30 stitches.
- Row 6: chain 3 and turn. 1 double crochet in the next stitch, 2 double crochets in the next stitch, 1 double crochet in each of the next 2 stitches, then [1 double crochet in each of the next 2 stitches, 2 double crochets in the next stitch, 1 double crochet in each of the next 2 stitches] 5 times: 36 stitches.
- For more rows, add one plain stitch to every repeat and keep 6 increases a row: Row 7 is chain 3, 1 double crochet in each of the next 4 stitches, 2 in the next, then [1 double crochet in each of the next 5, 2 in the next] 5 times: 42 stitches. Fasten off after the last row.
Check the work
Six more stitches every row: 6, 12, 18, 24, 30, 36. The last stitch of every row goes into the top of the chain 3, and the straight edge lies flat along a ruler.
- If the straight edge leans or the shape narrows, the last stitch of a row missed the top of the chain 3.
- If the half circle ruffles, a row has more than 6 increases; if it curls into a cone, it has fewer.
