Know these stitches: magic ring, single crochet, double crochet, slip stitch
Materials and yarn planning
Yarns we’ve reviewed that suit it: Lion Brand Basic Stitch Anti-Pilling yarn, Lion Brand Heartland yarn, Lion Brand Wool-Ease DK yarn. For the hook, choose by size and handle.
To buy for a set, make one complete motif first and weigh it: multiply by the number you need, add a little for joins and finishing, and divide by the ball weight on the label. A rectangular swatch cannot predict yarn for this shape. With a total length instead, the yarn-length-to-balls calculator gives the ball count.
Finished size and gauge
Measure the completed motif across its petals after finishing. The pattern’s 5-petal structure is fixed; its physical diameter depends on the yarn and hook.
The shape of the flower motif.
The gauge calculator compares your swatch with the pattern. A stitch name you do not know is in the abbreviation chart; a UK pattern’s names are in the US/UK term reference.
The pattern
Count rows for this patternMake the center
- Make 10 single crochets in a magic ring. Close the center and slip stitch into the first single crochet.
- Keep the beginning stitch marked. The joining slip stitch is not an eleventh single crochet.
- If changing color, fasten off the center and join the petal yarn in the first counted single crochet. Otherwise keep the working yarn attached.
Form five petals
- In the current single crochet, slip stitch if not already joined there. Chain 2, work 3 double crochets in that same stitch, chain 2 and slip stitch in the same stitch. One petal is complete.
- Slip stitch in the next single crochet as a separator. Move to the next single crochet and repeat the petal sequence.
- Continue around, using 2 center stitches per petal: one petal base and one separator. Make 5 petals.
- After the last separator, join to the beginning without adding another petal. Fasten off and weave the center and petal tails separately.
Check the work
5 petals × 2 center stitches = 10 center stitches used. Each petal has 3 double crochets, for 15 total. Chain arches are counted separately.
- If there is room for a sixth petal, recount the center and check whether a separator stitch was skipped.
- If the center opens, secure its tail before attaching the flower to another piece.
