Materials and yarn planning

Yarns we’ve reviewed that suit it: Knit Picks Dishie Cone yarn, Lion Brand 24/7 Cotton worsted yarn, Paintbox Yarns Cotton Aran. For the hook, choose by size and handle.

Yarn estimate: the 90 single crochets of one 5-round coaster at about 4 cm of medium yarn each come to about 4 m, or 5 m with the tails, so a 50 g ball of cotton (about 80 m) makes a set of four with plenty to spare.

To buy for a set, make one complete motif first and weigh it: multiply by the number you need, add a little for joins and finishing, and divide by the ball weight on the label. A rectangular swatch cannot predict yarn for this shape. With a total length instead, the yarn-length-to-balls calculator gives the ball count.

Finished size and gauge

In medium (category 4) yarn at 11 to 14 single crochets per 10 cm, the Craft Yarn Council range, Round 5’s 30 stitches measure about 21 to 27 cm around, so the coaster is about 7 to 9 cm across: right under a glass. For a mug, keep going the same way, with one more plain stitch between increases each round: Round 6 has 36 stitches (about 8 to 10.5 cm across) and Round 7 has 42 (about 9.5 to 12 cm). Measure your first washed coaster and make the rest to match.

Work the spiral

  1. Round 1: make a magic ring and 6 single crochets in it. Close the center and mark the first single crochet. Do not join rounds.
  2. Round 2: make 2 single crochets in every stitch: 12 stitches. Move the marker into the first new stitch.
  3. Round 3: repeat [single crochet in next stitch, 2 single crochets in next stitch] 6 times: 18 stitches.
  4. Round 4: repeat [single crochet in next 2 stitches, 2 single crochets in next stitch] 6 times: 24 stitches.
  5. Round 5: repeat [single crochet in next 3 stitches, 2 single crochets in next stitch] 6 times: 30 stitches.

Finish and repeat

  1. Slip stitch in the next stitch to reduce the ending step; do not count it as another single crochet. Fasten off.
  2. Weave the center tail through the backs of stitches in changing directions. Weave the ending tail without drawing in the outer edge.
  3. Wash and dry by the yarn label. Inspect the shape, then repeat the same round count for the remaining coasters you want.

Check the work

The marker moves once per round. Totals are 6, 12, 18, 24 and 30. Even with the right count, check that the coaster lies flat in your yarn.

  • If the coaster cups, inspect missed increases before adjusting tension.
  • If it ruffles, look for extra increases and compare the last flat round.
