Know these stitches: double crochet, half double crochet, treble crochet, slip stitch, magic ring
Materials and yarn planning
Yarns we’ve reviewed that suit it: Bernat Softee Cotton yarn, Knit Picks Dishie Cone yarn, Lion Brand 24/7 Cotton DK yarn. For the hook, choose by size and handle.
To buy for a set, make one complete motif first and weigh it: multiply by the number you need, add a little for joins and finishing, and divide by the ball weight on the label. A rectangular swatch cannot predict yarn for this shape. With a total length instead, the yarn-length-to-balls calculator gives the ball count.
Finished size and gauge
The star is about two and a half times the width of the center ring. Measure one after washing before making a set.
The gauge calculator compares your swatch with the pattern. A stitch name you do not know is in the abbreviation chart; a UK pattern’s names are in the US/UK term reference.
The pattern
Count rows for this patternCenter and points
- Round 1: make a magic ring. Chain 3 (counts as a double crochet) and work 9 double crochets in the ring. Close the ring and join to the top of the chain 3: 10 stitches.
- Round 2: [chain 6; starting in the second chain from the hook, work 1 sc, 1 hdc, 1 dc, 1 dc and 1 tr, one in each chain; skip the next double crochet of Round 1 and slip stitch into the following one] 5 times: 5 points.
- Fasten off and weave in the ends. Block the points flat.
Check the work
Each point uses 2 stitches of Round 1 (one skipped, one slip stitch), so 5 points use all 10.
- If the star cups, the ring is too tight; open it a little before Round 2.
- If a point is short, check its 5 stitches along the 5 chains.
