Know these stitches: magic ring, single crochet, crochet increase, back loop only, half double crochet, slip stitch, chain
Materials and yarn planning
Yarns we’ve reviewed that suit it: Lion Brand Basic Stitch Anti-Pilling yarn, Lion Brand Heartland yarn, Lion Brand Wool-Ease worsted yarn. For the hook, choose by size and handle.
Yarn estimate: the 2,172 single crochets of the cone at about 4 cm of medium yarn each and the 324 half double crochets of the tiers at about 6 cm come to about 110 m of green: one 200 m ball is plenty. The star takes about 1 m of yellow.
This pattern has about 2,516 stitches. For a closer figure in your own yarn, weigh what you have made once a good part is done, divide by the stitches made so far, multiply by 2,516 and divide by the ball weight on the label. Taller stitches use more yarn than short ones, so allow a margin.
Finished size and gauge
Sized from the Craft Yarn Council head chart, less 2.5 cm so the hat stays on, and rounded to the 6 stitches each increase round adds. The counts below are size Woman (53–58.5 cm head): about 52 cm around, which at 15 single crochets and 16 rounds per 10 cm is 78 stitches. The cone rises about 22 cm to Round 35 and the 9 even rounds below it add about 5.5 cm, so the hat stands about 27.5 cm tall from the brim to the tip. For your size and swatch, read the stitches from the size table below. These are calculations from the counts, not a measured sample.

Counts are rounded to whole stitches and rounds and to the pattern’s repeat. Check the first rows against your swatch.
The gauge calculator compares your swatch with the pattern. A stitch name you do not know is in the abbreviation chart; a UK pattern’s names are in the US/UK term reference.

- Round 32: [sc in the next 10 stitches, 2 sc in the next stitch] 6 times (72 stitches).
- Rounds 33–34: sc in each stitch (72 stitches).
- Round 35: [sc in the next 11 stitches, 2 sc in the next stitch] 6 times (78 stitches).
- That is the last increase: try the hat on now. It should sit snugly around your head; if it does not, see the fixes below before you go on.
- Round 36: sc in the back loop only of each stitch (78 stitches). The front loops of Round 35 stay free for a tier.
- Rounds 37–44: sc in each stitch (78 stitches).
- Slip stitch in the next stitch, fasten off and weave in the end.
- For another size: go on increasing every third round until you reach the count for your size in the size table, then work even until the hat is as tall as you want. Work the three back-loop rounds right after the increase rounds that reach about two-fifths, seven-tenths and all of your stitches.
Tiers (green)
- Hold the hat tip up. Join the yarn in a free front loop of Round 35, the lowest row of free loops. Chain 2 (it does not count), 2 half double crochets in each free front loop around, and join with a slip stitch to the first half double crochet (156 stitches). Fasten off.
- Work the same into the free front loops of Round 23 (108 stitches) and Round 11 (60 stitches). The doubled stitches ruffle on their own.
Star (yellow)
- Make a magic ring and work 5 single crochets in it; pull it closed and join with a slip stitch.
- [Chain 3, slip stitch in the second chain from the hook, single crochet in the next chain, slip stitch in the next stitch of the ring] 5 times. Fasten off, leaving a tail, and sew the star to the tip of the hat.
Check the work
Rounds 2, 5, 8 and every third round after them to Round 35 add 6 stitches, so the cone grows from 6 to 78. Each tier has twice the stitches of the round below its back-loop round: 60, 108, 156.
- If the cone curls to one side or ripples, count the plain rounds: every increase round is followed by exactly two plain rounds, the back-loop rounds among them.
- If the hat is loose, stop one increase round sooner: 6 stitches fewer is about 4 cm less around. If it is tight, add one more.
- If a tier stands out stiffly instead of hanging in a ruffle, work the tiers with a hook half a size larger.
