Materials and yarn planning

Yarns we’ve reviewed that suit it: Bernat Softee Cotton yarn, Knit Picks Dishie Cone yarn, Lion Brand 24/7 Cotton DK yarn. For the hook, choose by size and handle.

This pattern has about 600 stitches. For a closer figure in your own yarn, weigh what you have made once a good part is done, divide by the stitches made so far, multiply by 600 and divide by the ball weight on the label. Taller stitches use more yarn than short ones, so allow a margin.

Finished size and gauge

Measure the base after Round 8. Side height is approximately 8 × the measured height of one straight single-crochet round. The transition changes the angle, so measure the actual wall instead of adding the base radius to its height. The box below works out the base and the side rounds for the size you want.

Your basket’s pattern

Example: the basket the steps make, 13 cm across and 6 cm tall, at 12 single crochets and 13 rounds per 10 cm. Type the size you want and your swatch over it.

  • Base: 48 stitches, Rounds 1–8.
  • Sides: Round 9 in the back loops, then Rounds 10–16 through both loops, 48 stitches every round.
  • About 12.7 cm across and 6.2 cm tall.

Measure what the basket must hold and add a little room. Stand the base on the table after its last round: if it is smaller than you planned, work one more round, adding 6.

The gauge calculator compares your swatch with the pattern. A stitch name you do not know is in the abbreviation chart; a UK pattern’s names are in the US/UK term reference.

Count rows for this pattern

Grow the base

  1. Round 1: make 6 single crochets in a magic ring. Mark the first stitch and work in a spiral.
  2. Round 2: increase in every stitch: 12 single crochets.
  3. For each of Rounds 3 through 8, repeat [single crochet in the next r minus 2 stitches, increase in the next stitch] 6 times, where r is the current round number.
  4. The totals are 18, 24, 30, 36, 42 and 48. For Round 8, each repeat uses 7 old stitches and makes 8 new ones.

Raise the walls

  1. Round 9: work one back-loop-only single crochet in each stitch, with no increases: 48 stitches. Keep the marker at the start.
  2. Rounds 10 through 16: work one ordinary single crochet through both loops in every stitch: 48 stitches per round.
  3. Slip stitch in the next stitch, fasten off and weave the tails. Follow the yarn label for finishing and reshape without forcing the base.

Check the work

The base ends with 48 stitches. The transition and all 7 following side rounds stay at 48; increases here would widen the wall.

  • If the walls flare, count the transition round for accidental increases.
  • If the fabric slumps, use the swatch to decide whether a different yarn or hook gives the structure you want.
