Materials and yarn planning

Yarns we’ve reviewed that suit it: Knit Picks Dishie Cone yarn, Lion Brand 24/7 Cotton worsted yarn, Paintbox Yarns Cotton Aran. For the hook, choose by size and handle.

For an exact figure in your own yarn, weigh a washed swatch in the pattern stitch: the weighed-swatch yarn calculator scales it to each flat panel or strip. Allow a little more for seams, edging and tails.

Finished size and gauge

With S stitches and R rows per 10 cm, the strip is 200 ÷ S cm by 400 ÷ R cm; the pumpkin is about a third of the strip’s length across once gathered. Work more rows for a wider pumpkin.

The gauge calculator compares your swatch with the pattern. A stitch name you do not know is in the abbreviation chart; a UK pattern’s names are in the US/UK term reference.

The pattern

Count rows for this pattern

The ribbed body

  1. Chain 21. Row 1: single crochet in the second chain from the hook and in each chain across: 20 stitches.
  2. Rows 2–40: chain 1 and turn; single crochet in the back loop only of each stitch: 20 stitches. The ridges run across the strip.
  3. Fasten off, leaving a long tail. Fold the strip so the first and last rows meet and sew them together into a tube.

Gather, stuff and shape

  1. With the tail, sew a running stitch through the row ends along one open edge and pull it tight to close the bottom. Knot it.
  2. Stuff the tube firmly. Sew a running stitch around the other edge, pull it closed and knot it, leaving a long tail.
  3. Take the tail down through the center and out at the bottom, then up around the outside and down through the center again, pulling gently to dent the pumpkin. Repeat 6 times, spaced evenly, and knot it at the bottom.

Stem

  1. With green or brown, make a magic ring with 6 single crochets and work 4 rounds of 6 single crochets. Fasten off and sew the stem to the top center.

20 stitches in every row and 40 rows. Six wraps make six segments.

  • If the segments do not show, pull the wraps a little tighter or add stuffing.
  • If the stuffing shows at the top, pull the gathering tighter before knotting.
