Double crochet circle pattern: six rounds that lie flat

Make 12 double crochets in a magic ring, then add 12 stitches every round: 24, 36, 48, 60 and 72. On even rounds the increase sits in the middle of the repeat.

Materials and yarn planning

Yarns we’ve reviewed that suit it: Bernat Softee Cotton yarn, Knit Picks Dishie Cone yarn, Lion Brand 24/7 Cotton DK yarn. For the hook, choose by size and handle.

To buy for a set, make one complete motif first and weigh it: multiply by the number you need, add a little for joins and finishing, and divide by the ball weight on the label. A rectangular swatch cannot predict yarn for this shape. With a total length instead, the yarn-length-to-balls calculator gives the ball count.

Finished size and gauge

Each round of double crochet adds about two stitch heights to the width, one on each side. With R double-crochet rows per 10 cm in your swatch, the 6 rounds make a circle about 12 × 10 ÷ R cm across. Example: at 8 rows per 10 cm, about 15 cm. Measure the washed circle to be sure; this is a calculation from the counts, not a measured sample.

The gauge calculator compares your swatch with the pattern. A stitch name you do not know is in the abbreviation chart; a UK pattern’s names are in the US/UK term reference.

The pattern

Count rows for this pattern

The center

  1. Round 1: make a magic ring. Chain 3 (it counts as a double crochet) and work 11 double crochets in the ring. Pull the tail to close the center and join with a slip stitch to the top of the chain 3: 12 stitches.
  2. Round 2: chain 3 (counts as a double crochet), 1 double crochet in the same stitch, then 2 double crochets in each stitch around. Join to the top of the chain 3: 24 stitches.

Grow it, moving the increases

  1. Round 3: chain 3, 2 double crochets in the next stitch, then [1 double crochet in the next stitch, 2 double crochets in the next stitch] 11 times. Join: 36 stitches.
  2. Round 4: chain 3, 2 double crochets in the next stitch, 1 double crochet in the next stitch, then [1 double crochet in the next stitch, 2 double crochets in the next stitch, 1 double crochet in the next stitch] 11 times. Join: 48 stitches.
  3. Round 5: chain 3, 1 double crochet in each of the next 2 stitches, 2 double crochets in the next stitch, then [1 double crochet in each of the next 3 stitches, 2 double crochets in the next stitch] 11 times. Join: 60 stitches.
  4. Round 6: chain 3, 1 double crochet in the next stitch, 2 double crochets in the next stitch, 1 double crochet in each of the next 2 stitches, then [1 double crochet in each of the next 2 stitches, 2 double crochets in the next stitch, 1 double crochet in each of the next 2 stitches] 11 times. Join: 72 stitches. Fasten off, or keep going.

A bigger circle

  1. Round 7: chain 3, 1 double crochet in each of the next 4 stitches, 2 double crochets in the next stitch, then [1 double crochet in each of the next 5 stitches, 2 double crochets in the next stitch] 11 times. Join: 84 stitches.
  2. Each later round adds 12 stitches the same way: one more plain stitch in every repeat, with the increase at the end of the repeat on odd rounds and in its middle on even rounds.

Check the work

Twelve more stitches every round: 12, 24, 36, 48, 60, 72. Lay the circle on a table after each round: it should lie flat, with no ruffle and no bowl shape.

Stitches by round12 · 24 · 36 · 48 · 60 · 72
  • If the circle ruffles, a round has more than 12 increases; count it.
  • If it cups into a bowl, check that the chain 3 counts as a stitch in every round and that no increase was missed.
  • If the edge looks 12-sided, place the increases as written, so they move from round to round.
