Crochet Christmas tree: a stuffed cone with ruffled branches

Materials and yarn planning

Yarns we’ve reviewed that suit it: Bernat Softee Cotton yarn, Knit Picks Dishie Cone yarn, Lion Brand 24/7 Cotton DK yarn. For the hook, choose by size and handle.

Yarn estimate from the stitch counts: about 65 m of green, 1 m of yellow. That allows about 4 cm of yarn per tight single crochet, plus a quarter for tails and sewing. One 50 g ball of a light or medium yarn holds about 80 m or more, so one ball of each color is enough.

Finished size and gauge

If S single crochets measure 10 cm in your tight swatch, the widest round of 48 stitches is 48 × 10 ÷ S cm around, so the base is about 48 × 10 ÷ (S × 3.14) cm across. These are calculations from the counts, not a measured sample. With R rounds per 10 cm, the cone stands 28 × 10 ÷ R cm tall; at 20 rounds, about 14 cm before the star.

The gauge calculator compares your swatch with the pattern. A stitch name you do not know is in the abbreviation chart; a UK pattern’s names are in the US/UK term reference.

Cone (green)

  1. Round 1: make a magic ring and work 6 sc in it. Mark the first stitch and work in a spiral without joining (6 stitches).
  2. Round 2: [sc in the next stitch, 2 sc in the next stitch] 3 times (9 stitches).
  3. Round 3: sc in each stitch (9 stitches).
  4. Round 4: [sc in the next 2 stitches, 2 sc in the next stitch] 3 times (12 stitches).
  5. Check the fabric now: hold it up to the light. If you can see gaps between the stitches, stuffing will show through them; start again with a hook 0.5 mm smaller.
  6. Round 5: sc in each stitch (12 stitches).

  9. Round 8: [sc in the next 4 stitches, 2 sc in the next stitch] 3 times (18 stitches).
  10. Round 9: sc in each stitch through the back loop only, leaving the front loops of the round below free for branches (18 stitches).

Base (green)

  1. Round 1: make a magic ring and work 6 sc in it. Mark the first stitch and work in a spiral without joining (6 stitches).
  2. Round 2: 2 sc in each stitch (12 stitches).
  3. Round 3: [sc in the next stitch, 2 sc in the next stitch] 6 times (18 stitches).
  4. Round 4: [sc in the next 2 stitches, 2 sc in the next stitch] 6 times (24 stitches).

  6. Round 6: [sc in the next 4 stitches, 2 sc in the next stitch] 6 times (36 stitches).
  7. Round 7: [sc in the next 5 stitches, 2 sc in the next stitch] 6 times (42 stitches).
  8. Round 8: [sc in the next 6 stitches, 2 sc in the next stitch] 6 times (48 stitches).
  9. Do not fasten off: the base joins the cone in the last step.

Branches (green)

  1. Hold the cone point up. Join the yarn in a free front loop of Round 24, the lowest row of free loops. Chain 2 (it does not count), 2 half double crochets in each free front loop around, and join with a slip stitch to the first half double crochet (84 stitches). Fasten off.
  2. Work the same into the free front loops of Round 16 (60 stitches) and Round 8 (36 stitches). The doubled stitches ruffle on their own.

Star (yellow) and finishing

  1. Star: make a magic ring and work 5 single crochets in it; pull it closed and join with a slip stitch. [Chain 3, slip stitch in the second chain from the hook, single crochet in the next chain, slip stitch in the next stitch of the ring] 5 times. Fasten off, leaving a tail, and sew the star to the point of the tree.
  2. Stuff the cone firmly, right up into the point. Lay the card circle on the stuffing.
  3. Hold the base against the cone’s Round 28, wrong sides together, and single crochet through one stitch of each all the way around (48 stitches), adding a little stuffing before the gap closes. Fasten off and weave the end into the tree.

Check the work

Cone: 6, then 3 more every other round, 18 in Round 8, 30 in Round 16, 42 in Round 24 and 48 in Round 28. Branches: 36, 60, 84. Base: 6, 12, 18 and so on to 48.

  • If the tree leans, the stuffing is uneven: push more into the thin side through the base before closing it.
  • If the branches lie flat instead of ruffling, work 3 half double crochets in each loop instead of 2.
  • If you lose the free loops, look for the round where the stitches show a raised line: the free front loops sit just below it.
