Know these stitches: magic ring, single crochet, crochet increase, back loop only, slip stitch
Materials and yarn planning
Yarns we’ve reviewed that suit it: Knit Picks Dishie Cone yarn, Lion Brand 24/7 Cotton worsted yarn, Paintbox Yarns Cotton Aran. For the hook, choose by size and handle.
Yarn estimate: the 1,062 stitches at about 4 cm of medium yarn each come to about 45 m. One 50 g ball of cotton covers it; check the length on its label.
This pattern has about 1,062 stitches. For a closer figure in your own yarn, weigh what you have made once a good part is done, divide by the stitches made so far, multiply by 1,062 and divide by the ball weight on the label. Taller stitches use more yarn than short ones, so allow a margin.
Finished size and gauge
Measure your pot in three places: round the base, round the rim and its height. If you can only measure across, multiply by 3.14 for the distance round. The example is a 12 cm pot: 9 cm across the base (28.3 cm round), 12 cm across the rim (37.7 cm round) and 11 cm tall. At 14 single crochets and 16 rounds per 10 cm, the base needs 28.3 × 1.4 = 39.6 stitches, rounded to a multiple of 6: 42, in 7 rounds. The rim needs 37.7 × 1.4 = 52.8, rounded: 54, so the sides add 12 stitches, 2 rounds of 6. The sides are 11 cm tall and 11.1 cm up their slope, 18 rounds, and the pot widens by about 13 stitches over them, so each increase round goes where the pot has grown about 3 stitches past the cover: Rounds 15 and 23. For your pot, work out the base and rim stitches the same way and make one increase round for every 6 stitches between them; slip the cover on as you go and work the next increase round when the sides begin to feel snug. The box below works out the base, the rim and the increase rounds for your own pot. These are calculations from the counts, not a measured sample.
Your pot’s pattern
Example: the 12 cm pot above, at 14 single crochets and 16 rounds per 10 cm. Type your own pot and swatch over it.
- Base: 42 stitches, Rounds 1–7.
- Sides: Rounds 8–25, starting with the back-loop round; 6 more on Rounds 15 and 23.
- Top: 54 stitches, then the slip-stitch round.
Measure across the outside of the pot, at the base and at the rim, and its height standing up. The box counts the side rounds up the slope, which on a pot that flares is longer than its height. Slip the cover on as you go: the increase rounds are a guide, and the pot has the last word.
The gauge calculator compares your swatch with the pattern. A stitch name you do not know is in the abbreviation chart; a UK pattern’s names are in the US/UK term reference.

Count rows for this patternBase
- Round 1: make a magic ring, chain 1 and work 6 single crochets in it. Pull the ring closed and join with a slip stitch to the first single crochet (6 stitches).
- Round 2: chain 1 (it does not count), 2 single crochets in each stitch, join (12 stitches).
- Round 3: chain 1, [single crochet in the next stitch, 2 single crochets in the next stitch] 6 times, join (18 stitches).
- Round 4: chain 1, [single crochet in the next 2 stitches, 2 single crochets in the next stitch] 6 times, join (24 stitches).
- Round 5: chain 1, [single crochet in the next 3 stitches, 2 single crochets in the next stitch] 6 times, join (30 stitches).
- Round 6: chain 1, [single crochet in the next 4 stitches, 2 single crochets in the next stitch] 6 times, join (36 stitches).
- Round 7: chain 1, [single crochet in the next 5 stitches, 2 single crochets in the next stitch] 6 times, join (42 stitches).
- Stand the pot on the base: it should be a little wider than the bottom of the pot all round. If it is smaller, work one more round, adding 6, and add 6 to the rim count too.
Sides
- Round 8: chain 1, single crochet in the back loop only of each stitch, join (42 stitches). The free front loops make a ridge, and the sides turn up from it.
- Rounds 9–14: chain 1, single crochet in each stitch, join (42 stitches).
- Round 15: chain 1, [single crochet in the next 6 stitches, 2 single crochets in the next stitch] 6 times, join (48 stitches).
- Rounds 16–22: chain 1, single crochet in each stitch, join (48 stitches).
- Round 23: chain 1, [single crochet in the next 7 stitches, 2 single crochets in the next stitch] 6 times, join (54 stitches).
- Rounds 24–25: chain 1, single crochet in each stitch, join (54 stitches).
- Slip the cover over the pot: the sides should sit close to it and the top reach the rim. If the top falls short, work one more round without increases.
- Round 26: chain 1, slip stitch loosely in each stitch, join (54 slip stitches). Fasten off and weave in the ends.
Use
- Set the pot inside. The cover is not waterproof: water the plant in the sink and let the pot drain before it goes back in, or stand a small saucer inside the cover.
Check the work
The base grows by 6 a round to 42. The sides start at 42, add 6 on Rounds 15 and 23 and end at 54: at 14 stitches per 10 cm, 42 is 30 cm round and 54 is 38.6 cm, just over the pot’s 28.3 and 37.7 cm.
- If the base cups, a round is missing increases: count 6 more each round. If it ruffles, a round has too many.
- If the top is loose on the pot, undo to the last increase round and work it plain.
- If the sides stand away from the pot, the increase rounds sit too low: undo to the last one and work it a few rounds higher.
