Know these stitches: magic ring, treble crochet, double crochet, slip stitch
Materials and yarn planning
Yarns we’ve reviewed that suit it: Lion Brand Basic Stitch Anti-Pilling yarn, Lion Brand Heartland yarn, Lion Brand Wool-Ease DK yarn. For the hook, choose by size and handle.
To buy for a set, make one complete motif first and weigh it: multiply by the number you need, add a little for joins and finishing, and divide by the ball weight on the label. A rectangular swatch cannot predict yarn for this shape. With a total length instead, the yarn-length-to-balls calculator gives the ball count.
Finished size and gauge
Measure the finished width and height after following the yarn’s care instructions. Different stitch heights shape the lobes and point; the drawing is an outline, not a scale template.
The shape of the heart.
The gauge calculator compares your swatch with the pattern. A stitch name you do not know is in the abbreviation chart; a UK pattern’s names are in the US/UK term reference.
The pattern
Count rows for this patternMake both sides in the same ring
- Make an adjustable ring and a securing chain without counting it. Chain 3 for the first curved edge.
- Into the ring, work 3 treble crochets followed by 3 double crochets. Keep the tail underneath the worked stitches.
- Chain 1, make 1 treble crochet into the ring for the point, then chain 1.
- Into the ring, make 3 double crochets followed by 3 treble crochets. Chain 3 and slip stitch into the ring.
Close and finish
- Hold the stitches while pulling the ring tail gently. Let the two lobes meet around the final slip stitch.
- Fasten off. Weave the ring tail through the backs of the surrounding stitches, change direction and secure it before trimming.
- Weave the ending tail or leave a securely managed sewing tail if the heart will be attached to another piece.
- Shape the point and lobes by hand without stretching the yarn. If attaching the motif, sew through stable edge stitches and follow the care limits of both pieces.
Check the work
The two sides each contain 3 trebles + 3 double crochets. The separate central treble gives 7 trebles and 6 double crochets in total. The beginning and ending chain-3 arcs are not counted as tall stitches.
- If one lobe is larger, compare the order and count of its trebles and double crochets.
- If the center will not close, inspect whether the tail was caught rather than worked around.
