Know these stitches: magic ring, single crochet, chain
Materials and yarn planning
Yarns we’ve reviewed that suit it: Bernat Softee Cotton yarn, Knit Picks Dishie Cone yarn, Lion Brand 24/7 Cotton DK yarn. For the hook, choose by size and handle.
This pattern has about 300 stitches. For a closer figure in your own yarn, weigh what you have made once a good part is done, divide by the stitches made so far, multiply by 300 and divide by the ball weight on the label. Taller stitches use more yarn than short ones, so allow a margin.
Finished size and gauge
The base should match the bottom of the pot: for a bigger pot, work more increase rounds (6 more stitches each) and stop at 36 or 48 stitches, which divide by 4, so the four cords sit evenly, 9 or 12 stitches apart. With S single crochets per 10 cm, each cord is about 60 × 10 ÷ S cm long; add chains for a longer drop.
The gauge calculator compares your swatch with the pattern. A stitch name you do not know is in the abbreviation chart; a UK pattern’s names are in the US/UK term reference.
The pattern
Count rows for this patternBase
- Round 1: magic ring with 6 single crochets; work in a spiral.
- Round 2: 2 single crochets in each stitch: 12. Round 3: [1 sc, 2 sc in the next] 6 times: 18. Round 4: [2 sc, 2 sc in the next] 6 times: 24. Slip stitch to the next stitch.
Four cords
- Cord: chain 61. Single crochet in the second chain from the hook and in each chain back toward the base: 60 stitches. Slip stitch into the base stitch where the cord started.
- Slip stitch across the next 6 stitches of the base and make the next cord from the sixth. Repeat until there are 4 cords, one every 6 stitches.
Gather and hang
- Try the pot in the base. Pass all 4 cord ends through the ring, check the pot hangs level, and fold the ends back down over the ring.
- Wrap a length of yarn tightly around all 8 strands just below the ring 10 times, knot it, and hide the ends inside the wrap.
Check the work
Base: 6, 12, 18, 24. Four cords of 60 single crochets, spaced 6 stitches apart.
- If the pot tips, the cords are uneven: check each has 60 stitches.
- If the base is too small, add two more increase rounds before the cords, to 36 stitches, and space the cords 9 stitches apart. With 30 stitches, one cord would sit out of place.
