Materials and yarn planning

Yarns we’ve reviewed that suit it: Knit Picks Dishie Cone yarn, Lion Brand 24/7 Cotton worsted yarn, Paintbox Yarns Cotton Aran. For the hook, choose by size and handle.

This pattern has about 2,772 stitches. For a closer figure in your own yarn, weigh what you have made once a good part is done, divide by the stitches made so far, multiply by 2,772 and divide by the ball weight on the label. Taller stitches use more yarn than short ones, so allow a margin.

Finished size and gauge

The counts below are for about 16 single crochets and 18 rounds per 10 cm, which gives a hat about 56 cm around: a woman’s size, worn loose. For another size, stop the crown increases when the circle’s edge measures the head size (see the size table). Work the sides even until the hat, tried on, is as deep as you want; the 15 rounds here make about 8 cm. On the brim, work each increase round as many whole times as your stitches allow, then single crochet in any left over: Round 31 [sc in the next 4 stitches, 2 sc in the next stitch], Round 34 [sc in the next 5 stitches, 2 sc in the next stitch]. A 60-stitch crown gives a brim of 72, then 84; a 96-stitch crown gives 115, then 134.

  • If the brim flops, work it in a firmer cotton or one hook size smaller.
