Materials and yarn planning

Yarns we’ve reviewed that suit it: Bernat Softee Cotton yarn, Lion Brand 24/7 Cotton DK yarn, Lion Brand Wool-Ease DK yarn. For the hook, choose by size and handle.

Yarn estimate: the 21 trebles, 18 double crochets and the chains come to about 4 m of light yarn; a leftover is enough.

To buy for a set, make one complete motif first and weigh it: multiply by the number you need, add a little for joins and finishing, and divide by the ball weight on the label. A rectangular swatch cannot predict yarn for this shape. With a total length instead, the yarn-length-to-balls calculator gives the ball count.

Finished size and gauge

The shamrock is about twice as wide as one heart, with the stem below. Make the first heart and measure it before the other two: a smaller hook or a finer yarn makes a smaller shamrock. These are calculations from the counts, not a measured sample.

The gauge calculator compares your swatch with the pattern. A stitch name you do not know is in the abbreviation chart; a UK pattern’s names are in the US/UK term reference.

Count rows for this pattern

Leaves: make 3 hearts

  1. Make a magic ring and a securing chain that does not count. Chain 3 for the first curved edge.
  2. Into the ring, work 3 treble crochets and 3 double crochets, chain 1, 1 treble crochet for the point and chain 1.
  3. Into the ring, work 3 double crochets and 3 treble crochets, chain 3 and slip stitch into the ring.
  4. Pull the ring closed so the two lobes meet, and fasten off, leaving a tail about 20 cm long. Make two more hearts the same.

Stem

  1. Chain 11. Slip stitch in the second chain from the hook and in each chain back along it: 10 slip stitches. Fasten off, leaving a tail.

Assemble

  1. Lay the three hearts with their points together in the middle, one pointing up and one to each side, lobes outward.
  2. With one heart’s tail, sew the three points together with a few stitches through all of them, then sew the sides of neighboring hearts together where they touch, about 1 cm out from the middle.
  3. Sew the top of the stem under the middle, between the two lower hearts, so it curves out below. Weave in the ends, or sew a pin back to the back of the top heart.

Check the work

Each heart has 3 trebles and 3 double crochets in each lobe and 1 treble for the point: 7 trebles and 6 double crochets. The three hearts make 21 trebles and 18 double crochets.

Tall stitches in each heart: first lobe, point, second lobe6 · 1 · 6
  • If the hearts will not lie flat together, sew only the points first, then pin the sides before you sew them.
  • If a heart’s ring will not close, the tail was caught inside a stitch: make that heart again, working over the tail, not through it.
  • If one heart comes out larger, count its stitches against the other two: each lobe has 3 trebles and 3 double crochets.
