Before you start: Double crochet · Chain

Set up the V row

  1. Chain 9. Single crochet in the second chain and across: 8 single crochets.
  2. Chain 3 and turn; it counts as the first edge double crochet. Skip the stitch below it.
  3. Repeat [skip the next single crochet, work (dc, ch 1, dc) in the next single crochet] 3 times. Double crochet in the final stitch.
  4. Count 3 center spaces and 2 edge double crochets. There are 8 double crochets in total: 3 × 2 + 2.

Continue without hunting for stitch tops

  1. Chain 3 and turn, counting it as the edge double crochet.
  2. Work (dc, ch 1, dc) into each of the 3 chain-1 spaces. Do not work into the individual double-crochet tops.
  3. Double crochet into the top of the previous turning chain. Repeat this row.

Each V should sit over a chain space. If there is no center hole, you may have missed chain 1 or pulled it too tight.

For this foundation-row method, each added V needs 2 more base single crochets. Keep the 2 outside edge stitches. A V made with a different number of chains has different spacing; use the definition from the pattern you are following.
