Make the rows
- Foundation: chain a multiple of 3, plus 2. Row 1: (sc, ch 2, sc) in the third chain from the hook. Repeat [skip 2 chains, (sc, ch 2, sc) in the next chain] until 2 chains remain; skip 1 chain and half double crochet in the last chain. The 2 skipped chains at the start count as a half double crochet.
- Row 2: chain 3 and turn; it counts as a double crochet. Work 3 double crochets in each chain-2 space, then 1 double crochet in the top of the turning chain.
- Row 3: chain 2 and turn; it counts as a half double crochet. Work (sc, ch 2, sc) in the middle double crochet of each shell, then 1 half double crochet in the top of the turning chain.
- Repeat Rows 2 and 3. Finish on a Row 2, so the last row is shells.
Try a practice strip
Chain 14. Row 1 makes 4 (sc, ch 2, sc) groups, with a half double crochet at each end. Row 2 makes 4 shells: 14 double crochets, counting the turning chain and the last double crochet.
Work 9 rows and count the shells every second row: 4 each time. A fifth shell means a group went into a chain-2 space instead of the middle double crochet.
