Materials and yarn planning

Yarns we’ve reviewed that suit it: Lion Brand Basic Stitch Anti-Pilling yarn, Lion Brand Heartland yarn, Lion Brand Wool-Ease DK yarn. For the hook, choose by size and handle.

For an exact figure in your own yarn, weigh a washed swatch in the pattern stitch: the weighed-swatch yarn calculator scales it to each flat panel or strip. Allow a little more for seams, edging and tails.

Finished size and gauge

With S double crochets and R rows per 10 cm in your washed V-stitch swatch (count both stitches of every V and the edge stitches), the blanket is 102 × 10 ÷ S cm wide and 81 × 10 ÷ R cm long. Example: at 14 double crochets and 8 rows in 10 cm, it is about 73 × 101 cm, a baby blanket. Each V you add or take away changes the base by 2 single crochets. These are calculations from the counts, not a measured sample.

Counts are rounded to whole stitches and rows and to the pattern’s repeat. Check the first rows against your swatch.

The gauge calculator compares your swatch with the pattern. A stitch name you do not know is in the abbreviation chart; a UK pattern’s names are in the US/UK term reference.

Base and set-up row

  1. Chain 103. Row 1: single crochet in the second chain from the hook and in each chain across: 102 stitches.
  2. Row 2: chain 3 and turn; it counts as the first edge double crochet, so skip the stitch below it. [Skip the next single crochet, work (dc, ch 1, dc) in the next single crochet] 50 times, then double crochet in the last single crochet: 50 V stitches between 2 edge double crochets, 102 double crochets.

The V row, repeated

  1. Row 3: chain 3 and turn (it counts as the edge double crochet). Work (dc, ch 1, dc) into the chain-1 space of each of the 50 V stitches, then double crochet in the top of the turning chain: 102 double crochets.
  2. Repeat Row 3 to Row 81, or to your planned length. Fasten off and weave in the ends; a border from the borders lesson frames it.

Check the work

Every V row: 50 V stitches and 2 edge double crochets, 102 double crochets. Each V sits over a chain space.

Row 1 single crochets, then double crochets in every V row102 · 102 · 102
  • If there is no hole in the middle of a V, the chain 1 is missing or pulled too tight.
  • If the blanket narrows, check the double crochet in the top of the turning chain at the end of each row.
  • If a V lands on a stitch top instead of a space, undo to the last full row and count the Vs.
