Know these stitches: chain, single crochet, double crochet, V stitch
Materials and yarn planning
Yarns we’ve reviewed that suit it: Bernat Softee Cotton yarn, Lion Brand 24/7 Cotton DK yarn. For the hook, choose by size and handle.
Yarn estimate: about 9 m for the strip and 3 m for the tassel; a few grams of leftover cotton is enough.
For an exact figure in your own yarn, weigh a washed swatch in the pattern stitch: the weighed-swatch yarn calculator scales it to each flat panel or strip. Allow a little more for seams, edging and tails.
Finished size and gauge
At about 17 single crochets per 10 cm, the 10 stitches make a strip about 6 cm wide. At about 9 double-crochet rows per 10 cm, the 16 V rows make it about 18 cm long before the tassel. Add or leave out V rows to fit your books. These are calculations from the counts, not a measured sample.
The gauge calculator compares your swatch with the pattern. A stitch name you do not know is in the abbreviation chart; a UK pattern’s names are in the US/UK term reference.
The pattern
Count rows for this patternBase and V rows
- Chain 11. Row 1: single crochet in the second chain from the hook and in each chain across: 10 stitches.
- Row 2: chain 3 and turn (it counts as the edge double crochet). [Skip the next stitch, then (double crochet, chain 1, double crochet) in the next stitch] 4 times, and double crochet in the last stitch: 4 V stitches.
- Rows 3–17: chain 3 and turn. Work (double crochet, chain 1, double crochet) into the chain-1 space of each of the 4 V stitches, and double crochet in the top of the turning chain.
Last row and tassel
- Row 18: chain 1 and turn (it does not count). Single crochet in the first stitch, 2 single crochets in the chain-1 space of each V and 1 single crochet in the top of the turning chain: 10. Fasten off.
- Tassel: wind the yarn 20 times around the card. Thread a 20 cm strand under the loops at one edge and tie it tight, then cut the loops at the other edge. Wrap another strand around the bundle about 1 cm below the tie and knot it.
- Use the ends of the top tie to fasten the tassel to the middle of Row 1, then trim the tassel straight and weave in the remaining ends.
Check the work
Row 1 and the last row have 10 single crochets. Every V row has 4 V stitches and 2 edge double crochets.
- If the strip narrows, check the double crochet into the turning chain at the end of each V row.
- If the bookmark curls, pin it flat while it is damp and let it dry.
