Crochet hat size chart: head size, hat height and crown

Measure around the forehead and make the hat about 2.5 cm (1 in) smaller than that head, so it stays on: a 56 cm head needs a beanie about 53.5 cm around. No head to measure? The chart gives each age’s head range and the hat range that follows from it.

How the numbers are worked out

Head sizes are the Craft Yarn Council head circumference ranges. Each range is about 5 cm wide, so the hat range beside it is the same range less 2.5 cm: a crochet beanie needs a little negative ease to stay on. Pick the hat from the wearer’s own head measurement whenever you can; for a slouchy hat, use the full head measurement. The crown circle is the hat circumference divided by 3.14, the width a top-down hat reaches before you stop increasing.

Hat heights are common brim-to-crown heights for a fitted beanie. Add 3–5 cm for a folded brim, or 5–8 cm for a slouchy hat.

Measure a head

Wrap a tape measure around the head across the forehead and just above the ears, snug but not tight. For a gift you cannot measure, the age range is wide: make the hat for the middle of the range in a stitch that stretches, such as back-loop ribbing.

Try the hat on while you can still change it. Top-down: stop increasing when the crown circle reaches the width in the chart, then try it on after a few even rounds. Bottom-up: try the band on before you start the crown decreases.
