Yarn remaining calculator: how much yarn is left on a ball

Weigh what is left, enter the weight and length from the ball band, and see how many meters you still have and whether they are enough.

Em português calculadora de sobra de fio

On your scale
Weigh an empty cone or the bag separately.
Is it enough? (optional)
From the pattern, or rows left × meters per row.

The prefilled ball is an example: 100 g and 170 m with 42 g left.

Left on the ball

71.4 m

78.1 yd, at 1.7 m per gram from the label.

How it works

A ball band gives the length for the full weight, so length per gram = length ÷ weight. Multiply that by what your leftover weighs and you have the length left. It assumes the leftover is the same yarn as the label: a different color of the same yarn can have a different length per gram.

Find how much a row uses

Weigh the ball, crochet one full row, and weigh it again. The difference in grams times the length per gram is one row’s length. Multiply by the rows you have left, add a little for tails, and enter it above to see whether the ball will last. Striping several colors? Type that row’s grams into the stripe planner’s yarn section, and each color’s rows become the balls to buy.

Planning a whole project rather than one ball? Use the yarn quantity calculator; for a pattern in several colors, its color plan takes each color’s leftovers in grams and works out the balls still to buy for each.
