Crochet stripe planner: colors and row counts

Enter the total rows and each color’s stripe width. Preview the sequence and see which row changes color.

For A, B and C, enter the widths in that order. The cycle repeats.

Prefilled numbers are a worked example. Change them for your project.

30 rows planned

Color A: 12 rows.

Color B: 6 rows.

Color C: 12 rows.

The first row is at the bottom. Colors identify sequence positions; match them to your own yarn.

  1. Rows 1–4: color A.
  2. Rows 5–6: color B.
  3. Rows 7–10: color C.
  4. Rows 11–14: color A.
  5. Rows 15–16: color B.
  6. Rows 17–20: color C.
  7. Rows 21–24: color A.
  8. Rows 25–26: color B.
  9. Rows 27–30: color C.

These are row counts. Yarn for each color, in balls, is worked out below from a weighed row.

Yarn for each stripe color

Weigh one row worked across the full width (or a swatch, divided by its rows and scaled to your width), and each color’s rows become the yarn and the balls to buy.

Buy 3 balls: A 1, B 1, C 1.

Add a price for each ball to see the cost. Prices stay in this browser.

The numbers are an example: replace them with the weight of one of your own rows, your yarn’s ball size, and any leftovers and prices.

Color A

12 rows

1 ball: needs 98.7 m (58.1 g) with your 10% extra; 71.3 m to spare.

Color B

6 rows

1 ball: needs 49.4 m (29 g) with your 10% extra; 120.6 m to spare.

Color C

12 rows

1 ball: needs 98.7 m (58.1 g) with your 10% extra; 71.3 m to spare.

Your numbers and prices are saved in this browser only.

Weighing for an honest amount
  • Weigh the swatch dry, without its tails, on a scale that reads to the gram or finer; a bigger swatch gives a steadier number.
  • A row weighed on a narrow swatch needs scaling: grams a row = swatch grams ÷ swatch rows × your width ÷ swatch width.
  • Leftovers count only for the same yarn and color. Weigh them without the cardboard core or bag; the yarn remaining calculator takes the core off for you.
  • Borders, tails, fringe and seams are not in the squares or rows: add them to the allowance or as their own color.
  • Buy each color from one dye lot. A price you type is never sent anywhere and no shop price is shown here.

Use the result with your pattern

The stripe preview uses colors as position labels. It counts rows for each color, and the yarn section turns those rows into balls from a row you weigh: change a stripe width and every color’s yarn changes with it. An incomplete final stripe is labeled in the complete plan.

Your entries stay in this browser. Your numbers are kept in the page address, so a copied link opens the same plan. Reset example restores the worked example.
