Print or save the chart

The chart takes 2 pages of A4, landscape: 1 across and 2 down, with 5 mm squares. With a page showing how they join and 3 pages of written rows: 6 pages to print.

Print at 100% or Actual size, not Fit to page, so the squares keep their size: each page has a 5 cm bar to check. The SVG opens in Inkscape, Illustrator or Affinity Designer with the numbers as text.

Yarn for each color

Crochet a swatch in each yarn, count its squares and weigh it, and the chart maker turns this chart’s squares into the yarn and the balls to buy for each color.

Buy 14 balls: A 4, B 4, C 2, D 2, E 1, F 1.

Add a price for each ball to see the cost. Prices stay in this browser.

The numbers are an example: replace them with your own weighed swatch, your yarn’s ball size, and any leftovers and prices.

Color A

628 blocks on the chart

4 balls: needs 587.2 m (345.4 g) with your 10% extra; 92.8 m to spare.

Color B

596 blocks on the chart

4 balls: needs 557.3 m (327.8 g) with your 10% extra; 122.7 m to spare.

Color C

273 blocks on the chart

2 balls: needs 255.3 m (150.2 g) with your 10% extra; 84.7 m to spare.

Color D

252 blocks on the chart

2 balls: needs 235.6 m (138.6 g) with your 10% extra; 104.4 m to spare.

Color E

89 blocks on the chart

1 ball: needs 83.2 m (49 g) with your 10% extra; 86.8 m to spare.

Color F

82 blocks on the chart

1 ball: needs 76.7 m (45.1 g) with your 10% extra; 93.3 m to spare.

Weighing for an honest amount
  • Weigh the swatch dry, without its tails, on a scale that reads to the gram or finer; a bigger swatch gives a steadier number.
  • Tapestry crochet carries the colors you are not using inside the stitches, so each carried color uses yarn on every stitch it travels through. Swatch the same way you will work, and weigh what each color used.
  • Leftovers count only for the same yarn and color. Weigh them without the cardboard core or bag; the yarn remaining calculator takes the core off for you.
  • Borders, tails, fringe and seams are not in the squares or rows: add them to the allowance or as their own color.
  • Buy each color from one dye lot. A price you type is never sent anywhere and no shop price is shown here.

Choosing a picture that crochets well

A crochet chart has far fewer squares than a photo has pixels, so small details disappear. Pictures with one clear subject, strong contrast and a plain background come out best: a pet against a wall, a flower, a logo, a short name. Drag across the picture to keep only the subject, and press Rotate if it opens sideways.

The more squares across, the more detail survives: a logo or a simple shape reads at 30 squares, a face needs many more. Try a few widths and watch the preview. Drawings, pixel art and logos keep cleaner outlines with Picture set to “A drawing or logo”, which gives each square the color most of it already has instead of a blend of its neighbors.

How many squares and colors

Each square is one stitch: one block in corner to corner, one block or space in filet. The finished width and your gauge decide how many squares go across (100 cm at 4 blocks in 10 cm is 40 blocks), and the chart maker works out the rows that keep the picture's shape.

Each color is a separate yarn, and every place a row changes color is a change you make by hand. Fewer colors mean fewer bobbins and fewer changes; the summary counts the color changes along the rows, so you can compare two settings before you buy yarn. A stray stitch is a single square whose color touches none of its own color, two changes for one stitch: tidying gives it the color around it, and the summary says how many it changed. Paint any square back if it mattered.

Why your gauge changes the chart

Crochet stitches are rarely square. At 16 single crochets and 18 rows in 10 cm, a stitch is 6.3 mm wide and a row 5.6 mm tall, so a picture charted square for square comes out squat. The chart maker adds the rows that make up for it: a picture as tall as it is wide gets 18 rows for every 16 stitches. Crochet a swatch in the stitch your chart uses, wash it the way you'll wash the finished piece, count the stitches and rows in 10 cm (or 4 inches) and type them in. C2C blocks are close to square, but count them across and up all the same. Tick Draw the chart at this gauge to see the chart in its real proportions.

Which chart type suits your picture

Corner to corner is the usual way to crochet a picture blanket: each block is a chain 3 and three double crochets, worked on the diagonal from one corner, and the written rows list each diagonal's colors with where to increase and decrease. See how to crochet corner to corner.

Color rows suit tapestry crochet and single-crochet graphgans: bags, cushions and wall hangings, where the unused yarn is carried inside the stitches. Each square is one stitch; see tapestry crochet.

Filet draws the picture in blocks and spaces of one color, like lace. Silhouettes, names and simple shapes work; photos with many tones lose too much. Tick Make the light parts blocks when the subject is light on a dark background. See filet crochet.

Your picture stays on your device

Your browser reads the picture and turns it into squares; it is never uploaded. The chart, not the picture, is saved in this browser as you work, and a copied link holds only the chart. Download the PDF to print the chart at a size you can read, over as many pages as it needs, with the written rows after it; or keep it as an SVG or a PNG with its color key and finished size.

How much yarn for each color

A picture chart tells you how many squares each color covers. Crochet a small swatch, count its squares and weigh it, and the yarn section under the chart turns those squares into each color’s yarn and the whole balls to buy, after any leftovers. Prices you add stay in this browser.
