Tapestry crochet: colorwork with the yarn carried inside

Tapestry crochet changes color within a row and carries the unused color inside the stitches, so there are no floats on the back. It is usually worked in tight single crochet from a chart, and makes a dense fabric for bags, rugs and baskets.

Tapestry: two colors, the unused one carried inside

Carry and change

  1. Lay the color you are not using along the tops of the stitches and work over it, so it is wrapped inside each new stitch.
  2. To change color, work the last stitch of the old color up to its final yarn over, then finish it with the new color. The new color is now on the hook.
  3. Drop the old color and carry it along inside the next stitches until you need it again.

Keep the picture straight

Single crochet stitches lean, so pictures can slant. Working in rounds without turning, or working into the back loop, keeps the columns straighter. Keep the carried strand slightly loose so the fabric does not pucker.

Two colors are easiest; with three, carry both unused strands, which makes the fabric thicker.

Chart it

Draw the design in the chart maker under Color rows. It lists each row as color runs, such as 4 A, 2 B, 4 A, in the order you work them.
