Turn a size into a foundation chain

Stitches across = width in cm × your stitches per 10 cm ÷ 10. Round to the stitch pattern’s repeat, then add the chains your first row skips: usually 1 for single crochet, 2 for half double crochet, and 2 for double crochet, whose 3 skipped chains count as its first stitch. For 152 double crochets, chain 154. Rows work the same way with your rows per 10 cm and the length.

Eight stitches per 10 cm is about a double crochet in bulky yarn, 12 a double crochet in worsted, 16 a single crochet in DK. Your swatch decides: wash and dry it first, because blankets often grow once they hang.

Bed blankets follow the mattress

A bed blanket covers the top of the mattress and hangs over the sides. Measure the mattress, add the overhang you want on each side, and use that as the size. The bed sizes above assume a generous overhang; a coverlet that only covers the top can be much smaller.

There is no single standard for blanket sizes. Patterns and shops use slightly different numbers, so treat this chart as a starting point and measure the bed or the person.
