Materials and yarn planning

Yarns we’ve reviewed that suit it: Knit Picks Dishie Cone yarn, Lion Brand 24/7 Cotton worsted yarn, Paintbox Yarns Cotton Aran. For the hook, choose by size and handle.

Yarn estimate: the 1,074 single crochets at about 4 cm of medium yarn each come to about 45 m: one 50 g ball.

This pattern has about 1,074 stitches. For a closer figure in your own yarn, weigh what you have made once a good part is done, divide by the stitches made so far, multiply by 1,074 and divide by the ball weight on the label. Taller stitches use more yarn than short ones, so allow a margin.

Finished size and gauge

At about 14 single crochets and 16 rounds per 10 cm in medium yarn, the 32 stitches measure about 23 cm around, so the case lies about 11 cm wide, and 29 rounds make it about 18 cm deep: room for most folded glasses, which are about 15 cm across. Measure yours folded: each chain more or less adds or takes away 2 stitches around, about 0.7 cm of width. These are calculations from the counts, not a measured sample.

The gauge calculator compares your swatch with the pattern. A stitch name you do not know is in the abbreviation chart; a UK pattern’s names are in the US/UK term reference.

The pattern

Count rows for this pattern

Case

  1. Chain 16. Round 1: single crochet in the second chain from the hook and in the next 13 chains, 3 single crochets in the last chain, then, along the other side of the chain, single crochet in the next 13 chains and 2 single crochets in the last one. Join with a slip stitch to the first single crochet (32 stitches).
  2. Rounds 2–29: chain 1, single crochet in each stitch around, join (32 stitches). Slip the glasses in after a few rounds to check the width. Do not fasten off.

Flap

  1. Row 1: chain 1, single crochet in the next 16 stitches, which are one side of the case: 16 stitches. Leave the rest of the round unworked.
  2. Rows 2–6: chain 1 and turn, single crochet in each stitch across: 16 stitches.
  3. Rows 7–9: chain 1 and turn, single crochet 2 together, single crochet across to the last 2 stitches, single crochet 2 together: 14, then 12, then 10 stitches.
  4. Row 10: chain 1 and turn, single crochet in the next 4 stitches, chain 6, skip 2 stitches, single crochet in the last 4 stitches. Fasten off and weave in the ends.

Button

  1. Fold the flap over the front and mark the middle of the chain loop. Sew the button to the front there, about 3 cm below the top edge, through both layers of the front only.

Check the work

Every round of the case has 32 stitches: 14 + 3 + 13 + 2 from the chain. The flap takes half of them, 16, and loses 2 a row on its last three rows: 14, 12, 10.

Stitches in each round of the case, the flap rows and the last flap row32 · 32 · 16 · 10
  • If the case is too tight for the glasses, start again with 2 more chains; every chain adds 2 stitches to each round.
  • If the flap pulls to one side, its first row started in the wrong place: it should span one flat side, from one end of the case to the other.
  • If the button loop is loose, chain 1 fewer; if the button will not pass, chain 1 more.
