Know these stitches: single crochet, chain, slip stitch
Materials and yarn planning
Yarns we’ve reviewed that suit it: Knit Picks Dishie Cone yarn, Lion Brand 24/7 Cotton worsted yarn, Paintbox Yarns Cotton Aran. For the hook, choose by size and handle.
For an exact figure in your own yarn, weigh a washed swatch in the pattern stitch: the weighed-swatch yarn calculator scales it to each flat panel or strip. Allow a little more for seams, edging and tails.
Finished size and gauge
Sized for a card the size of a bank card, 85.60 × 53.98 mm (the ID-1 size in ISO/IEC 7810); measure your gift card first. At 16 single crochets and 18 rows per 10 cm, 17 stitches make about 10.5 cm across and the 12 rows of each side of the pocket about 6.5 cm, so the card slides in with room to spare once the sides are sewn. If your swatch differs, keep the pocket about 1.5 cm wider and 1 cm deeper than the card. These are calculations from the counts, not a measured sample.
The gauge calculator compares your swatch with the pattern. A stitch name you do not know is in the abbreviation chart; a UK pattern’s names are in the US/UK term reference.
The pattern
Count rows for this patternThe strip
- In red, leave a tail about 30 cm long for sewing and chain 18. Row 1: single crochet in the second chain from the hook and in each chain across: 17 stitches.
- Rows 2–24: chain 1 and turn (it does not count), single crochet in each stitch across: 17 stitches. Change to green at the end of Row 24.
- Rows 25–31: chain 1 and turn, single crochet in each stitch across: 17 stitches. This is the flap.
- Loop: chain 1 and turn, slip stitch in each of the first 8 stitches, chain 6 and slip stitch into the next stitch, the middle one. Fasten off.
Pocket and button
- Fold Rows 1–12 up against Rows 13–24, so the strip makes a pocket with the green flap above it.
- Sew both sides of the pocket closed with red yarn and the yarn needle, starting with the tail, through both layers and matching row to row.
- Fold the flap down over the front. Mark where the loop falls and sew the button there with needle and thread, through the front layer only.
- Slide the card in, fold the flap down and slip the loop over the button.
Check the work
Every row has 17 stitches, so the two sides of the pocket match row for row when it is folded.
- If the card is tight, add 2 stitches to the chain and 2 rows to the pocket; if it slips out, take them away.
- If the loop is loose over the button, take out a chain; if it will not reach, add one.
