Materials and yarn planning

Yarns we’ve reviewed that suit it: Lion Brand Basic Stitch Anti-Pilling yarn, Lion Brand Heartland yarn, Lion Brand Wool-Ease DK yarn. For the hook, choose by size and handle.

For an exact figure in your own yarn, weigh a washed swatch in the pattern stitch: the weighed-swatch yarn calculator scales it to each flat panel or strip. Allow a little more for seams, edging and tails.

Finished size and gauge

If S half double crochets and R rows measure 10 cm, planned dimensions are 800 ÷ S by 1000 ÷ R cm. A and C each occupy 40 rows; B occupies 20. Those row shares do not include extra tails and swatching.

Counts are rounded to whole stitches and rows and to the pattern’s repeat. Check the first rows against your swatch.

The gauge calculator compares your swatch with the pattern. A stitch name you do not know is in the abbreviation chart; a UK pattern’s names are in the US/UK term reference.

Count rows for this pattern

Work the first color cycle

  1. With A, chain 82. Half double crochet in the third chain and across: 80 stitches. The skipped chains do not count.
  2. Chain 2 and turn without counting the chains. Work 80 half double crochets. Complete 4 rows in A.
  3. On the final pull-through of the last stitch in Row 4, use B. Chain 2 in B and turn. Work 2 rows in B.
  4. Change to C on the last pull-through before the new stripe. Work 4 rows in C. One 10-row cycle is complete.

Repeat and manage tails

  1. Repeat the A4, B2, C4 cycle 10 times in total for 100 rows. Check the row counter at each color change.
  2. Cut and weave between color blocks when carrying an unused yarn would pull the side edge. Leave enough tail to weave in changing directions.
  3. Fasten off after the last C stripe. Weave ends into matching-color stitches. Wash and dry by the yarn label.
  4. Use the stripe planner to try another sequence before changing the pattern. Recalculate the total rows and yarn needed for each color.

Check the work

(4 + 2 + 4) × 10 = 100 rows. A = 40, B = 20 and C = 40 rows. Every row stays at 80 stitches.

  • If the sides pull inward at changes, inspect the carried strand before altering stitch count.
  • If a stripe ends on the wrong side, check how many rows of that color are already complete.
