Know these stitches: single crochet, puff stitch
Materials and yarn planning
Yarns we’ve reviewed that suit it: Lion Brand Basic Stitch Anti-Pilling yarn, Lion Brand Heartland yarn, Lion Brand Wool-Ease worsted yarn. For the hook, choose by size and handle.
For an exact figure in your own yarn, weigh a washed swatch in the pattern stitch: the weighed-swatch yarn calculator scales it to each flat panel or strip. Allow a little more for seams, edging and tails.
Finished size and gauge
With S stitches and R rows per 10 cm in your washed swatch of the four-row repeat, the blanket is 101 × 10 ÷ S cm wide and 113 × 10 ÷ R cm long. Example: at 14 stitches and 15 rows in 10 cm, 101 stitches and 113 rows make about 72 × 75 cm, a baby blanket. Change the width by 2 stitches at a time to keep the puffs in step, or read the counts for larger sizes from the table below. These are calculations from the counts, not a measured sample.

Sizes from your swatch
Example: 14 stitches and 15 rows in 10 cm, the gauge the steps are written for. Type your own swatch over it to see your counts.
| Size | Width | Length | Stitches | Rows |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Crib | 114.3 cm (45 in) | 152.4 cm (60 in) | 161 (chain 162) | 229 |
| Lap | 91.4 cm (36 in) | 121.9 cm (48 in) | 127 (chain 128) | 181 |
| Throw | 127 cm (50 in) | 152.4 cm (60 in) | 177 (chain 178) | 229 |
| Twin bed | 167.6 cm (66 in) | 228.6 cm (90 in) | 235 (chain 236) | 341 |
Counts are rounded to whole stitches and rows and to the pattern’s repeat. Check the first rows against your swatch.
The gauge calculator compares your swatch with the pattern. A stitch name you do not know is in the abbreviation chart; a UK pattern’s names are in the US/UK term reference.
The pattern
Count rows for this patternFoundation
- Chain 102. Row 1: single crochet in the second chain from the hook and in each chain across: 101 stitches.
The four-row repeat
- Row 2: chain 1 and turn. Single crochet in the first stitch, then [puff in the next stitch, single crochet in the next stitch] 50 times: 50 puffs and 51 single crochets, 101 stitches. Close each puff with its chain 1, as in the puff stitch lesson.
- Row 3: chain 1 and turn. Single crochet in each stitch across, one in the closing top of each puff and one in each single crochet: 101 stitches. Do not work into the gap beside a puff.
- Row 4: chain 1 and turn. Single crochet in the first 2 stitches, then [puff in the next stitch, single crochet in the next stitch] 49 times, and single crochet in the last stitch: 49 puffs, 101 stitches. Each puff sits between two puffs of Row 2.
- Row 5: work as Row 3: 101 stitches.
- Repeat Rows 2–5 28 times in all, to Row 113, or to your planned length, ending with a plain row. Fasten off and weave in the ends.
Check the work
Every row: 101 stitches. Row 2 has 50 puffs and Row 4 has 49, each one stitch along from the puffs below.
- If a plain row gains a stitch, look for a single crochet worked into the gap beside a puff as well as into its top.
- If the puffs look flat, draw every loop up to the same height before you close the puff.
- If the edges pull in, check the single crochet at each end of the puff rows.
