Materials and yarn planning

Yarns we’ve reviewed that suit it: Bernat Softee Cotton yarn, Lion Brand 24/7 Cotton DK yarn. For the hook, choose by size and handle.

Yarn estimate: about 5 m of yellow, 5 m of green and 1 m of brown or gold.

To buy for a set, make one complete motif first and weigh it: multiply by the number you need, add a little for joins and finishing, and divide by the ball weight on the label. A rectangular swatch cannot predict yarn for this shape. With a total length instead, the yarn-length-to-balls calculator gives the ball count.

Finished size and gauge

At about 20 single crochets and 22 rounds per 10 cm, the oval is about 6 cm tall and 4 cm wide, and the leaves add about 5 cm. For a bigger pineapple, start with a longer chain and work more rounds: each extra round adds 6 stitches and about 1 cm to the width and the height. These are calculations from the counts, not a measured sample.

The gauge calculator compares your swatch with the pattern. A stitch name you do not know is in the abbreviation chart; a UK pattern’s names are in the US/UK term reference.

The pattern

Count rows for this pattern

Body (yellow)

  1. Chain 6. Round 1: single crochet in the second chain from the hook and in the next 3 chains, 3 single crochets in the last chain, then, along the other side of the chain, single crochet in the next 3 chains and 2 single crochets in the last one, beside the first stitch. Join with a slip stitch to the first single crochet: 12 stitches.
  2. Round 2: chain 1, 2 single crochets in the first stitch, single crochet in the next 3 stitches, 2 single crochets in each of the next 3 stitches, single crochet in the next 3 stitches, 2 single crochets in each of the last 2 stitches; join: 18 stitches.
  3. Round 3: chain 1, single crochet in the first stitch, 2 single crochets in the next stitch, single crochet in the next 3 stitches, [single crochet in the next stitch, 2 single crochets in the next stitch] 3 times, single crochet in the next 3 stitches, [single crochet in the next stitch, 2 single crochets in the next stitch] 2 times; join: 24 stitches.
  4. Round 4: chain 1, single crochet in the first 2 stitches, 2 single crochets in the next stitch, single crochet in the next 3 stitches, [single crochet in the next 2 stitches, 2 single crochets in the next stitch] 3 times, single crochet in the next 3 stitches, [single crochet in the next 2 stitches, 2 single crochets in the next stitch] 2 times; join: 30 stitches.
  5. Fasten off and weave in the ends. The end where you made 3 single crochets in Round 1 is the top of the pineapple.

Leaves (green)

  1. Find the 12 stitches that curve around the top end and join the green yarn with a slip stitch in the 4th of them.
  2. Leaf 1: chain 7, slip stitch in the second chain from the hook, single crochet in the next 2 chains, half double crochet in the next 3 chains, slip stitch in the next stitch of the top.
  3. Leaf 2: chain 9, slip stitch in the second chain from the hook, single crochet in the next 3 chains, half double crochet in the next 4 chains, slip stitch in the next stitch of the top.
  4. Leaf 3: chain 11, slip stitch in the second chain from the hook, single crochet in the next 4 chains, half double crochet in the next 5 chains, slip stitch in the next stitch of the top.
  5. Leaf 4: chain 9, slip stitch in the second chain from the hook, single crochet in the next 3 chains, half double crochet in the next 4 chains, slip stitch in the next stitch of the top.
  6. Leaf 5: chain 7, slip stitch in the second chain from the hook, single crochet in the next 2 chains, half double crochet in the next 3 chains, slip stitch in the next stitch of the top.
  7. Fasten off and weave in the ends. The middle leaf is the longest; the leaves either side of it fan out.

Crossed lines

  1. Thread a yarn needle with the brown or gold yarn. Backstitch 3 straight lines diagonally across the body, about 1.5 cm apart, from the lower left to the upper right.
  2. Backstitch 3 more lines the other way, from the lower right to the upper left, so they cross the first lines in diamonds. Keep the stitches loose enough that the body stays flat.
  3. Weave the ends in on the back, then sew the appliqué on with matching thread, through the back loops of the last round.

Check the work

The body is 12, 18, 24, 30 stitches: each round adds 1 at its start, 3 around the top and 2 at its end. The leaves are 6, 8, 10, 8, 6 chains long, with the longest in the middle.

Single crochets by round12 · 18 · 24 · 30
  • If the oval cups, the increases are short of 6: count each round. If it ruffles, the hook is too small for the yarn.
  • If the top looks flat rather than round, check that the 3 increases of each round fall around the top end.
  • If the crossed lines pucker the body, unpick them and stitch again more loosely.
