Know these stitches: chain, single crochet
Materials and yarn planning
Yarns we’ve reviewed that suit it: Bernat Softee Cotton yarn, Lion Brand 24/7 Cotton DK yarn. For the hook, choose by size and handle.
For an exact figure in your own yarn, weigh a washed swatch in the pattern stitch: the weighed-swatch yarn calculator scales it to each flat panel or strip. Allow a little more for seams, edging and tails.
Finished size and gauge
Measure the wrist where the bracelet will sit. With S single crochets per 10 cm, chain (wrist in cm + 2) × S ÷ 10, rounded up, plus 1 for turning.
The gauge calculator compares your swatch with the pattern. A stitch name you do not know is in the abbreviation chart; a UK pattern’s names are in the US/UK term reference.
The pattern
Count rows for this patternThe band
- Chain 41 (for a 16 cm wrist at 22 single crochets per 10 cm; work out your own count from the sizing line).
- Row 1: single crochet in the second chain from the hook and in each chain across: 40 stitches.
- Rows 2 and 3: chain 1 and turn; single crochet in each stitch: 40 stitches.
Close it
- At the end of Row 3, chain 8 and slip stitch into the corner of the band to make a button loop. Fasten off.
- Sew the button to the middle of the other end, check it passes through the loop, and weave in the ends.
Check the work
3 rows of 40 single crochets. The loop is 8 chains; make it a little smaller than the button so it holds.
- If the bracelet is too loose, take out a few stitches at the far end before sewing the button.
- If the band curls, block it flat or work it in a firmer cotton.
