Materials and yarn planning

Yarns we’ve reviewed that suit it: Bernat Softee Cotton yarn, Lion Brand 24/7 Cotton DK yarn. For the hook, choose by size and handle.

Yarn estimate: the 1,761 single crochets at about 3 cm of light yarn each come to about 53 m, and the two ties about 6 m more, so one 50 g ball of cotton covers it in most brands; check the meters on the label.

This pattern has about 1,861 stitches with the edge and the ties. For a closer figure in your own yarn, weigh what you have made once a good part is done, divide by the stitches made so far, multiply by 1,861 and divide by the ball weight on the label. Taller stitches use more yarn than short ones, so allow a margin.

Finished size and gauge

Each row adds 2 stitches. At 17 single crochets and 19 rows per 10 cm, the 40 rows here make a triangle 81 stitches (about 48 cm) along the long edge and about 21 cm from the edge to the point: an adult size, worn over the hair and tied at the back of the neck. For another size, try it on as you go and stop at the end of a row when the long edge reaches across your forehead to just behind each ear; the ties close the rest. These are calculations from the counts, not a measured sample.

The gauge calculator compares your swatch with the pattern. A stitch name you do not know is in the abbreviation chart; a UK pattern’s names are in the US/UK term reference.

The pattern

Count rows for this pattern

The triangle

  1. Row 1: chain 2, then work 3 single crochets in the second chain from the hook: 3 stitches.
  2. Row 2: chain 1 and turn (it does not count). Work 2 single crochets in the first stitch, 1 in the next and 2 in the last: 5.
  3. Rows 3–40: chain 1 and turn. Work 2 single crochets in the first stitch, 1 in each stitch up to the last, and 2 in the last: 2 more stitches every row, 81 in Row 40. Do not fasten off.

Edge and ties

  1. First tie: chain 51, then slip stitch in the second chain from the hook and in each chain back to the bandana: 50 slip stitches.
  2. Row 41: turn so the long edge is on top and single crochet in each stitch of Row 40: 81.
  3. Second tie: chain 51 and work it like the first. Fasten off and weave in the ends.

Check the work

Each row has 2 more stitches than the one before: 3, 5, 7 and so on, 81 in Row 40 and in the edge row. Each tie has 50 slip stitches.

  • If a side is not straight, an increase was missed or doubled: Row n should have 2n + 1 stitches.
  • If the long edge stretches out of shape, work the edge row with a hook 0.5 mm smaller.
