Materials and yarn planning

Yarns we’ve reviewed that suit it: Bernat Softee Cotton yarn, Lion Brand 24/7 Cotton DK yarn, Lion Brand Wool-Ease DK yarn. For the hook, choose by size and handle.

Yarn estimate: the 972 stitches of the pair at about 4 cm of light yarn each come to about 40 m, and the post stitches take a little more. One 50 g ball is plenty.

This pattern has about 972 stitches in the pair. For a closer figure in your own yarn, weigh what you have made once a good part is done, divide by the stitches made so far, multiply by 972 and divide by the ball weight on the label. Taller stitches use more yarn than short ones, so allow a margin.

Finished size and gauge

Sized from the Craft Yarn Council’s foot chart: a baby in shoe size 0–4, about 6 to 18 months, has a foot 7.75–11.5 cm long. At about 18 single crochets and 20 rounds per 10 cm, this sole is about 9.5–10 cm long and 4 cm wide, for a foot of about 9.5 cm. Measure from the heel to the longest toe. For a foot 1 cm shorter or longer, start with 2 chains fewer or more and change every side count below by the same number. These are calculations from the counts, not a measured sample.

The gauge calculator compares your swatch with the pattern. A stitch name you do not know is in the abbreviation chart; a UK pattern’s names are in the US/UK term reference.

  5. The end where you made 3 single crochets in Round 1 is the toe; the beginning and end of each round are at the heel.

Sides

  1. Round 5: chain 1, single crochet in the back loop only of each stitch, join (42 stitches). The edge turns up and the sole stays flat.
  2. Rounds 6–8: chain 1, single crochet in each stitch, join (42 stitches).

Toe

  1. Round 9: chain 1, single crochet in the first 13 stitches, [invisible decrease] 6 times, single crochet in the last 17 stitches, join (36 stitches).

  3. Round 11: chain 1, single crochet in the first 7 stitches, [invisible decrease] 6 times, single crochet in the last 11 stitches, join (24 stitches).
  4. The decreases sit over the toe and close it in. Check the opening: it should stretch over the baby’s heel.

Cuff

  1. Round 12: chain 2 (it does not count), double crochet in each stitch, join (24 stitches).
  2. Rounds 13–15: chain 2, [front post double crochet around the next stitch, back post double crochet around the next stitch] 12 times, join (24 stitches).
  3. Fasten off and weave in the ends. Make the second bootie the same.

Check the work

The sole is 24, 30, 36, 42: 6 more a round. The toe rounds take 6 each, 36, 30, 24, always over the 12 stitches in the middle of the toe end; the cuff keeps 24.

  • If the sole cups up before Round 5, the starting chain is tight: chain on a hook 0.5 mm larger.
  • If the toe is pointed rather than round, check the decreases fall in the middle of the toe end on every round.
  • If the cuff will not pass over the heel, work Round 12 on a hook 0.5 mm larger, or use the 2 chains more in the sole for the next size up.
