Crochet slippers: an easy ribbed rectangle, folded and sewn

Materials and yarn planning

Yarns we’ve reviewed that suit it: Lion Brand Basic Stitch Anti-Pilling yarn, Lion Brand Heartland yarn, Lion Brand Wool-Ease worsted yarn. For the hook, choose by size and handle.

For an exact figure in your own yarn, weigh a washed swatch in the pattern stitch: the weighed-swatch yarn calculator scales it to each flat panel or strip. Allow a little more for seams, edging and tails.

Finished size and gauge

Sized from the Craft Yarn Council foot chart: the chain is the foot length and the rows add up to the foot’s circumference around the ball of the foot. The counts below are the woman’s US 7–9½ (feet 23.5–25.5 cm long and 20.5 cm around): at 12 back-loop single crochets and 14 rows per 10 cm, measured with the ribs flat, 29 stitches make about 24 cm and 29 rows about 21 cm. The ribs stretch around the foot, so the slipper hugs it. For your size and swatch, read the stitches and rows from the size table below, or measure the foot itself. These are calculations from the counts, not a measured sample.

Counts are rounded to whole stitches and rows. Check the first rows against your swatch.

The gauge calculator compares your swatch with the pattern. A stitch name you do not know is in the abbreviation chart; a UK pattern’s names are in the US/UK term reference.

The pattern

Count rows for this pattern

The rectangle: make 2

  1. Chain 30. Row 1: single crochet in the second chain from the hook and in each chain across: 29 stitches.
  2. Rows 2–29: chain 1 and turn (it does not count), single crochet in the back loop only of each stitch across: 29 stitches. The back loops make ridges that run the length of the slipper.
  3. Fasten off, leaving a tail about 60 cm long for sewing.

Folding and sewing

  1. Fold the rectangle in half the long way, so Row 1 and the last row meet along the top. The short end where the tail hangs is the toe.
  2. Toe: thread the tail on the yarn needle, take it in and out through the ends of the rows along the toe end, pull it tight to gather the toe closed, and secure it with a few stitches.
  3. Top: with the same tail, sew Row 1 to the last row from the toe toward the heel for about 9 cm, a little more than a third of the length. The rest stays open for the foot.
  4. Heel: with a new length of yarn, sew the two layers of the other short end together, from the fold up to the opening.
  5. Weave in the ends, turn the slipper right side out and try it on. Make the second slipper the same way.

Check the work

Every row has 29 stitches, so the edges stay straight, and both rectangles have 29 rows, so the pair matches.

Single crochets in every row29 · 29 · 29 · 29
  • If the slipper is loose around the foot, take out rows: each 2 rows is about 1.5 cm around. If it is tight, add rows.
  • If it is too long, chain fewer: each stitch is a little under 1 cm of length. Gathering pulls the toe in by about 1 cm.
  • Socks and slippers on hard floors slide; dots of non-slip fabric paint on the sole help.
