Materials and yarn planning

Yarns we’ve reviewed that suit it: Lion Brand Basic Stitch Anti-Pilling yarn, Lion Brand Heartland yarn, Lion Brand Wool-Ease worsted yarn. For the hook, choose by size and handle.

Weigh the ball as you go: the yarn remaining calculator turns the grams left into meters, so you can see whether it will last. Allow a little more for edging and tails.

Finished size and gauge

With B blocks per 10 cm, the blanket is 32 × 10 ÷ B cm wide and 40 × 10 ÷ B cm long. Change the block counts in the blanket calculator’s C2C mode for any size.

Count rows for this pattern

Increase, Rows 1–32

  1. Row 1: chain 6, double crochet in the fourth chain from the hook and in the next 2 chains: 1 block.
  2. Row 2: chain 6 and turn. Double crochet in the fourth chain from the hook and the next 2 chains, slip stitch into the chain-3 space of the block below, chain 3 and work 3 double crochets in the same space: 2 blocks.
  3. Rows 3–32: chain 6 and turn, make a block on the new chain, then [slip stitch into the next chain-3 space, chain 3, 3 double crochets in the same space] across. Each row adds one block; Row 32 has 32 blocks.

Shift, Rows 33–40

  1. On the side edge that is already 32 blocks wide, decrease: slip stitch across the last block’s 3 double crochets into its chain-3 space instead of chaining 6. On the other edge, keep increasing. Each row stays at 32 blocks.

Decrease, Rows 41–71

  1. Decrease at both edges: slip stitch across at the start, and stop in the last chain-3 space at the end without adding a block. Each row has one block fewer; Row 71 has 1 block.
  2. Fasten off. Work a border of single crochet around all four sides if you like: 3 single crochets into each block edge and 3 into each corner.

Check the work

Rows 1–32: blocks = row number. Rows 33–40: 32 blocks. Rows 41–71: 72 minus the row number. 32 × 40 = 1,280 blocks.

  • If the rectangle turns into a square, you switched to decreasing on both edges too early; count the long side’s blocks.
  • If a block leans, check the slip stitch went into the chain-3 space, not into a double crochet.
