Materials and yarn planning

Yarns we’ve reviewed that suit it: Lion Brand Basic Stitch Anti-Pilling yarn, Lion Brand Heartland yarn, Lion Brand Wool-Ease worsted yarn. For the hook, choose by size and handle.

For an exact figure in your own yarn, weigh a washed swatch in the pattern stitch: the weighed-swatch yarn calculator scales it to each flat panel or strip. Allow a little more for seams, edging and tails.

Finished size and gauge

With S stitches and R rows per 10 cm in your washed bobble swatch, the blanket is 83 × 10 ÷ S cm wide and (rows) × 10 ÷ R cm long. Change the width by 4 stitches at a time to keep the bobbles in step.

Counts are rounded to whole stitches and rows and to the pattern’s repeat. Check the first rows against your swatch.

The gauge calculator compares your swatch with the pattern. A stitch name you do not know is in the abbreviation chart; a UK pattern’s names are in the US/UK term reference.

Count rows for this pattern

Foundation

  1. Chain 84. Row 1 (right side): single crochet in the second chain from the hook and in each chain across: 83 stitches. Mark this side as the right side.

The four-row repeat

  1. Row 2 (wrong side): chain 1 and turn. Single crochet in the first 3 stitches, then [bobble in the next stitch, single crochet in the next 3 stitches] 20 times: 20 bobbles, 83 stitches.
  2. Row 3: chain 1 and turn. Single crochet in each stitch, including the top of each bobble: 83 stitches.
  3. Row 4 (wrong side): chain 1 and turn. Single crochet in the first 5 stitches, then [bobble in the next stitch, single crochet in the next 3 stitches] 19 times, then single crochet in the last 2 stitches: 19 bobbles, 83 stitches.
  4. Row 5: chain 1 and turn. Single crochet in each stitch: 83 stitches.
  5. Repeat Rows 2 to 5 thirty times, or to your planned length, then work one more plain row. Fasten off and weave in the ends.

Check the work

Every row has 83 stitches; a bobble counts as one. Bobble rows alternate 20 and 19 bobbles, so the bobbles sit in a diamond grid.

Stitches in every row83 · 83 · 83 · 83 · 83
  • If a bobble pops to the back, you made it on a right-side row; keep bobbles on wrong-side rows.
  • If the edge leans, count the stitches at the start and end of each bobble row: the plain stitches at the ends are 3 and 3, then 5 and 2.
