How to crochet a bobble stitch: close unfinished stitches

Work 5 unfinished double crochets in one stitch, then close all 6 loops together. The raised bump is pushed to the side the pattern calls the right side.

123 loops on the hook + yarn over

Step 1 Yarn over, insert into the stitch, yarn over and pull up a loop. Yarn over and draw through 2 loops. Leave the last 2 loops on the hook.

Give the bumps a background

From a base of 6 single crochets, chain 1 and turn. Work [bobble in next stitch, single crochet in next stitch] 3 times. Check for 3 bobbles and 3 single crochets.

Turn and work one single crochet into each bobble top and each single crochet: 6 stitches. Use plain rows between bobble rows when you want the bumps separated. The pattern decides which face is shown.

Don’t mix up bobbles and popcorns

If there are 7 loops before closing, check whether you made an extra partial double crochet. If the bump disappears, check its direction before undoing it.

A cluster can use fewer partial stitches and can form a flatter group. Do not replace this bobble with 5 complete double crochets: that is the beginning of a popcorn.
