Materials and yarn planning

Yarns we’ve reviewed that suit it: Lion Brand Basic Stitch Anti-Pilling yarn, Lion Brand Heartland yarn, Lion Brand Wool-Ease DK yarn. For the hook, choose by size and handle.

For an exact figure in your own yarn, weigh a washed swatch in the pattern stitch: the weighed-swatch yarn calculator scales it to each flat panel or strip. Allow a little more for seams, edging and tails.

Finished size and gauge

Count only single crochets across the moss-stitch swatch while including the intervening spaces in its measured width. If S single crochets span 10 cm and R rows span 10 cm, the planned size is 400 ÷ S by 600 ÷ R cm. This pattern makes no infant-sleep or safety claim.

The gauge calculator compares your swatch with the pattern. A stitch name you do not know is in the abbreviation chart; a UK pattern’s names are in the US/UK term reference.

The pattern

Count rows for this pattern

Set up the blanket

  1. Chain 82. Single crochet in the fourth chain from the hook. The skipped chains form the starting edge and first space.
  2. Repeat [chain 1, skip next chain, single crochet in next chain] to the end. Count 40 single crochets and 40 spaces including the starting space.
  3. Mark the starting-chain space and final single crochet so neither edge disappears into the yarn.

Repeat and finish

  1. Chain 2 and turn. Single crochet in the next chain space. Repeat [chain 1, skip next single crochet, single crochet in next chain space] across, finishing in the previous starting-chain space.
  2. Keep 40 single crochets and 40 spaces per row. Continue until you have 60 rows, or your swatch-based planned row count.
  3. Fasten off and weave tails through the backs of stitches in changing directions. This version has no separate border.
  4. Wash and dry by the yarn label and measure the finished piece. Retain the label with it.

Check the work

The last single crochet is always in the previous row’s starting space. There are no added stitches in the individual single-crochet tops.

  • If the blanket narrows, inspect the starting-chain space at the row end.
  • If the planned size is wrong, use the actual moss-stitch gauge, not plain single-crochet gauge.
