Try the label’s washing method on a spare swatch before the finished piece goes in the water.
Before you start: Blocking and care
Support wet fabric; avoid pulling an edge
Check before adding water
- Find the label for the yarn actually used, including any contrasting yarn. Read its washing and drying instructions.
- Check fastenings, lining, stuffing or decorations separately. When materials have conflicting care limits, do not assume the least delicate component decides.
- Try the same method on a spare swatch first. Inspect changes in size, color and surface before treating the complete piece.
Support the shape
When the label permits hand washing, support the wet fabric as you lift it. Avoid pulling a large item by one corner. Remove water and dry it by the stated method.
If the label specifies flat drying, lay the piece flat and reshape it without stretching beyond the intended measurements. Do not substitute hanging for flat drying. Blocking and laundering serve different jobs even when both involve water.
Put it away dry
Fold the dry item without forcing a hard crease through thick embellishments. Keep its care note and spare matching yarn together. Inspect stored pieces periodically for moisture, pests or damaged ends.
If you no longer know the yarn, treat the care method as unknown. Test a small inconspicuous area or seek advice before adding heat or agitation. A fiber name by itself is not a complete care label.
