Materials and yarn planning

Yarns we’ve reviewed that suit it: Lion Brand Basic Stitch Anti-Pilling yarn, Lion Brand Heartland yarn, Lion Brand Wool-Ease DK yarn. For the hook, choose by size and handle.

For an exact figure in your own yarn, weigh a washed swatch in the pattern stitch: the weighed-swatch yarn calculator scales it to each flat panel or strip. Allow a little more for seams, edging and tails.

Finished size and gauge

With S counted stitch positions and R rows per 10 cm in the waffle fabric, planned dimensions are 920 ÷ S by 1200 ÷ R cm. Measure the fabric in its relaxed finished state.

Counts are rounded to whole stitches and rows and to the pattern’s repeat. Check the first rows against your swatch.

The gauge calculator compares your swatch with the pattern. A stitch name you do not know is in the abbreviation chart; a UK pattern’s names are in the US/UK term reference.

The pattern

Count rows for this pattern

Make the foundation

  1. Chain 94. Double crochet in the fourth chain and each remaining chain. Count the skipped chain 3 as the first double crochet: 92 stitches.
  2. Mark both edge stitches. The repeat is 1 edge stitch, 30 groups of 3 stitches, and 1 edge stitch.

Work the grid

  1. Row 2: chain 2 and turn without counting it. Double crochet in the first stitch. Repeat [front-post double crochet around next post, double crochet in each of next 2 stitches] 30 times. Double crochet in the final stitch.
  2. Row 3: chain 2 and turn without counting it. Double crochet in the first stitch. Repeat [double crochet in next stitch, front-post double crochet around each of next 2 posts] 30 times. Double crochet in the final stitch.
  3. Alternate Rows 2 and 3 until 120 rows are complete. A post stitch replaces the stitch at that position; do not also work into its top V.
  4. Fasten off, weave ends and finish according to the yarn label. Keep the plain outer edges or add a border only after checking that the body lies as intended.

Check the work

Every row has 1 + 30 × 3 + 1 = 92 stitches. The turning chain is not included after the foundation row.

  • If the count grows, look for a top-V stitch added above a worked post.
  • If estimating yarn from a swatch, include the post texture and any chosen border in the estimate.
