Materials and yarn planning

Yarns we’ve reviewed that suit it: Knit Picks Dishie Cone yarn, Lion Brand 24/7 Cotton worsted yarn, Paintbox Yarns Cotton Aran. For the hook, choose by size and handle.

To buy for a set, make one complete motif first and weigh it: multiply by the number you need, add a little for joins and finishing, and divide by the ball weight on the label. A rectangular swatch cannot predict yarn for this shape. With a total length instead, the yarn-length-to-balls calculator gives the ball count.

Finished size and gauge

Work rounds until each square measures the cushion size or 1 cm less, so the cover fits snugly. Each round adds about two double crochet heights to the width.

The gauge calculator compares your swatch with the pattern. A stitch name you do not know is in the abbreviation chart; a UK pattern’s names are in the US/UK term reference.

Two squares

  1. Work the solid granny square pattern: 12 double crochets in Round 1, then add 16 each round with (2 dc, ch 2, 2 dc) in every corner: 28, 44, 60, 76, 92, 108, 124, 140.
  2. Keep going until the square measures the cushion size. Make a second square with the same number of rounds.

Join and fill

  1. Hold the squares wrong sides together. Join three sides with single crochet through both layers, working 3 single crochets into each corner space.
  2. Insert the cushion, then join the fourth side the same way. Fasten off and hide the end inside.

Check the work

Every round adds 16 double crochets: 4 corners of 4 new stitches each. Both squares need the same number of rounds.

  • If the square twists, check the corner groups: (2 dc, ch 2, 2 dc) in every corner space.
  • If the cover is loose, join with a smaller hook or work one round fewer.
