Materials and yarn planning

Yarns we’ve reviewed that suit it: Lion Brand Basic Stitch Anti-Pilling yarn, Lion Brand Heartland yarn, Lion Brand Wool-Ease DK yarn. For the hook, choose by size and handle.

To buy for a set, make one complete motif first and weigh it: multiply by the number you need, add a little for joins and finishing, and divide by the ball weight on the label. A rectangular swatch cannot predict yarn for this shape. With a total length instead, the yarn-length-to-balls calculator gives the ball count.

Finished size and gauge

The four-round version has 60 double crochets and 4 corner spaces. Measure a washed square’s actual side before planning an arrangement. The hook size alone won’t tell you how big the square will be.

Count rows for this pattern

Make the first round

  1. Chain 4 and slip stitch in the first chain to form a ring.
  2. Chain 3, counting it as one double crochet, then make 2 double crochets into the ring and chain 2.
  3. Repeat [3 double crochets into the ring, chain 2] 3 more times. Join to the top of the beginning chain 3. Count 12 double crochets and 4 chain-2 corners.

Fill the sides and expand the corners

  1. Slip stitch to the next corner space. In that space, chain 3 and make 1 double crochet, chain 2, then make 2 double crochets. The chain 3 counts as the first double crochet.
  2. Work one double crochet into every stitch along the next side. In the next corner, work (2 dc, ch 2, 2 dc). Continue around all four sides.
  3. After working the final side, join to the top of the starting chain 3. There are 28 double crochets after Round 2.
  4. Repeat the same rule for Rounds 3 and 4, giving 44 then 60 double crochets. Fasten off, weave tails and finish according to the yarn label.

Check the work

Every new round adds 4 × 4 = 16 double crochets. The corner-space count stays 4. Joining and traveling slip stitches are not extra double crochets.

  • If a side differs, check for a missed stitch beside a corner space.
  • If you counted the starting chain as well as its replacement stitch, remove that extra stitch from the total.
