Materials and yarn planning

Yarns we’ve reviewed that suit it: Lion Brand Basic Stitch Anti-Pilling yarn, Lion Brand Heartland yarn, Lion Brand Wool-Ease DK yarn. For the hook, choose by size and handle.

For an exact figure in your own yarn, weigh a washed swatch in the pattern stitch: the weighed-swatch yarn calculator scales it to each flat panel or strip. Allow a little more for seams, edging and tails.

Finished size and gauge

Each rectangle is 240 ÷ S cm around the hand and 240 ÷ R cm tall with S stitches and R rows per 10 cm. The example seam leaves 6 rows open after the first 6 cuff rows, then joins the final 12 rows. Move or resize that opening from the wearer’s measurements.

Counts are rounded to whole stitches and rows. Check the first rows against your swatch.

The gauge calculator compares your swatch with the pattern. A stitch name you do not know is in the abbreviation chart; a UK pattern’s names are in the US/UK term reference.

Count rows for this pattern

Make the pair

  1. Chain 25 and single crochet in the second chain and across: 24 stitches.
  2. Chain 1 and turn without counting it. Work 24 single crochets per row for 24 rows.
  3. Make a second identical rectangle. Fasten off and finish both according to the yarn label. Compare their dimensions.

Mark the thumb opening

  1. Bring the row-end edges together to form a tube. Check the unseamed circumference around the intended hand.
  2. Mark the chosen thumb gap on both edges. The example joins the first 6 rows from the cuff, leaves the next 6 rows open and joins the final 12. Adjust those divisions before sewing.
  3. Sew corresponding row ends in the lower section. Secure the yarn, skip the marked opening and begin a separately anchored seam above it.
  4. Weave the tails. Repeat on the second mitt and check that both openings align. Stop and change the seam or count if the opening restricts movement.

Check the work

Each rectangle has 24 rows. The example divides them as 6 joined + 6 open + 12 joined = 24. The opening has no strand carried across it.

  • If the thumb gap is in the wrong place, reopen only the seam and move the markers.
  • If the hand tube is too tight, remake the rectangle with a swatch-based stitch count rather than widening the seam gap.
