Know these stitches: back loop only, single crochet
Materials and yarn planning
Yarns we’ve reviewed that suit it: Lion Brand Basic Stitch Anti-Pilling yarn, Lion Brand Heartland yarn, Lion Brand Wool-Ease DK yarn. For the hook, choose by size and handle.
For an exact figure in your own yarn, weigh a washed swatch in the pattern stitch: the weighed-swatch yarn calculator scales it to each flat panel or strip. Allow a little more for seams, edging and tails.
Finished size and gauge
Band width = 100 ÷ S cm and unjoined length = 600 ÷ R cm when S and R are back-loop single crochets and rows per 10 cm. The folded join uses some length. Pin it temporarily and check the fit before sewing.

Counts are rounded to whole stitches and rows. Check the first rows against your swatch.
The gauge calculator compares your swatch with the pattern. A stitch name you do not know is in the abbreviation chart; a UK pattern’s names are in the US/UK term reference.
The pattern
Count rows for this patternMake the ribbed strip
- Chain 11. Single crochet in the second chain and each chain across: 10 stitches.
- Chain 1 and turn; it does not count. Single crochet in the back loop of each stitch: 10 stitches.
- Repeat that row for 60 rows total, or the count you calculated and confirmed from your washed strip. Leave a sewing tail when fastening off.
Form the twist
- Lay the strip flat. Fold each short end in half across its width so each forms a U shape.
- Interleave the folded ends: place one half of the second end inside the first U and its other half outside. The seam now has 4 layers in a sandwich.
- Pass the needle through all 4 layers along the short edge. Keep the stitches secure without gathering the edge.
- Weave the tail into the seam. Turn the seam inward and spread the band to reveal the twist. Check the circumference again.
Check the work
The strip keeps 10 stitches per row. The seam catches all 4 folded layers; no free flap pulls away when the band is opened.
- If the twist separates, inspect the seam for a layer the needle missed.
- If the band is too tight, undo the seam and add rows before trying again. Do not force the fabric to fit.
