Materials and yarn planning

Yarns we’ve reviewed that suit it: Lion Brand Basic Stitch Anti-Pilling yarn, Lion Brand Heartland yarn, Lion Brand Wool-Ease DK yarn. For the hook, choose by size and handle.

To buy for a set, make one complete motif first and weigh it: multiply by the number you need, add a little for joins and finishing, and divide by the ball weight on the label. A rectangular swatch cannot predict yarn for this shape. With a total length instead, the yarn-length-to-balls calculator gives the ball count.

Finished size and gauge

This three-round motif has 36 double crochets and 6 corners. Measure both the corner-to-corner and flat-side-to-flat-side dimensions after finishing; they are different measurements.

The pattern

Count rows for this pattern

Set up the six corners

  1. Chain 4 and slip stitch in the first chain to form a ring.
  2. Chain 3, counting it as a double crochet, then make 1 double crochet into the ring and chain 2.
  3. Repeat [2 double crochets into the ring, chain 2] 5 more times. Join to the top of the starting chain 3. Count 12 double crochets and 6 corners.

Grow the hexagon

  1. Slip stitch to the next corner space. Chain 3, chain 2, then double crochet in that space. The starting chain counts as the first double crochet of (dc, ch 2, dc).
  2. Double crochet in every stitch along the side. Work (dc, ch 2, dc) in the next corner. Repeat around all 6 sides and join. Round 2 has 24 double crochets.
  3. Repeat the same corner-and-side rule once more. Round 3 has 36 double crochets and still 6 corners.
  4. Fasten off and weave the tails. Finish by the yarn label before measuring or joining matching motifs.

Check the work

Each round adds 6 × 2 = 12 double crochets. Keep the corner count at 6 and compare corresponding side counts before joining.

  • If the motif becomes a pentagon, locate the missing corner space.
  • If one side is longer, check for a stitch added into a joining slip stitch.
