Finger crochet: make a chain with no hook

Finger crochet uses your index finger as the hook. Make a slip knot on your finger, then pull the working yarn through that loop again and again to make a chain. Chunky or super bulky yarn works best.

US terms
1 loop on the hook

Step 1 Make a slip knot and place the working loop on the hook.

  1. 1 loop on the hook
Step 1 Make a slip knot and place the working loop on the hook.
  2. 1 loop on the hook + yarn over
Step 2 Wrap the yarn over the hook from back to front.
  3. 11 loop on the hook + yarn over
Step 3 Draw that wrap through the loop already on the hook. One chain is complete.
  4. 11 loop on the hook + yarn over
Step 4 Repeat, keeping each new loop large enough for the hook shaft to pass without forcing it.

The finger chain is this motion with your index finger in place of the hook.

Make a finger chain

  1. Make a slip knot and put the loop on the index finger of your dominant hand, snug but not tight.
  2. Hold the tail with your other hand. Lay the working yarn over your finger, in front of the loop.
  3. Lift the loop over the working yarn and off the finger, so the working yarn is pulled through it. One chain is made and the new loop sits on your finger.
  4. Repeat. Pull the tail gently now and then to keep the chain even.

What to make with it

A finger chain in chunky yarn makes a bracelet, a headband tie, garland for a tree, a lanyard or a drawstring. Join chains side by side with a few stitches to make a small scarf.

It needs no hook, which makes it a good first step for a young child: the motion is the same as a crochet chain, only bigger.

From finger to hook

Most crochet projects start with this same chain; a few start from a ring instead. Once the finger chain feels easy, try the same motion with a large hook and the yarn you used, and then a single crochet row into the chain.
