Crochet bow tie: a Father’s Day gift in an evening

Make a strip 12 stitches wide and 52 rows long and join it into a loop. Flatten it, wrap a 5-stitch band round the middle, and thread a strap as long as the collar plus 2 cm through the back.

Materials and yarn planning

Yarns we’ve reviewed that suit it: Bernat Softee Cotton yarn, Lion Brand 24/7 Cotton DK yarn. For the hook, choose by size and handle.

Yarn estimate: the 1,226 stitches at about 3.5 cm of light yarn each come to about 45 m. One 50 g ball is plenty.

For an exact figure in your own yarn, weigh a washed swatch in the pattern stitch: the weighed-swatch yarn calculator scales it to each flat panel or strip. Allow a little more for seams, edging and tails.

Finished size and gauge

At about 22 single crochets and 24 rows per 10 cm, the bow is about 11 cm wide and 5.5 cm tall. Measure around the neck where a shirt collar sits, or read the collar size on a shirt, and add 2 cm for the button: a 40 cm collar gives a 42 cm strap, 100 rows. For a child, make the strap to the child’s own neck and the loop 40 rows long. These are calculations from the counts, not a measured sample.

The gauge calculator compares your swatch with the pattern. A stitch name you do not know is in the abbreviation chart; a UK pattern’s names are in the US/UK term reference.

The pattern

Count rows for this pattern

Bow

  1. Chain 13. Row 1: single crochet in the second chain from the hook and in each chain across: 12 stitches.
  2. Rows 2–52: chain 1 and turn (it does not count), single crochet in each stitch across: 12 stitches.
  3. Join: fold the strip so the last row lies on the foundation chain. Slip stitch through both edges, stitch by stitch: 12 slip stitches. Fasten off, leaving a tail. Flatten the loop with the join in the middle of the back.

Band

  1. Chain 6. Row 1: single crochet in the second chain from the hook and in each chain across: 5 stitches.
  2. Rows 2–18: chain 1 and turn, single crochet in each stitch across: 5 stitches. Fasten off, leaving a long tail.
  3. Pinch the middle of the bow into two or three folds, wrap the band tightly round it, and sew its ends together at the back. Leave the band a little loose at the back for the strap.

Strap

  1. Chain 6. Row 1: single crochet in the second chain from the hook and in each chain across: 5 stitches.
  2. Rows 2–99: chain 1 and turn, single crochet in each stitch across: 5 stitches.
  3. Row 100, the buttonhole: chain 1 and turn, single crochet in the first stitch, chain 3, skip 3 stitches, single crochet in the last stitch: 5 stitches. Fasten off.
  4. Sew the button to the other end of the strap. Thread the strap through the back of the band and center the bow on it.

Check the work

The bow has 12 stitches in each of 52 rows, joined with 12 slip stitches; the band 5 by 18; the strap 5 by 100, the last row 1 + 3 + 1.

Stitches in each row of the bow, the band and the strap12 · 5 · 5
  • If the bow will not stand out, the band is loose: sew it tighter, or use a firmer yarn on a hook 0.5 mm smaller.
  • If the join shows at the front, turn the loop so the join sits under the band.
  • If the strap twists, it has more stitches on one row than another: count each end.
