Know these stitches: chain, double crochet, single crochet, slip stitch
Materials and yarn planning
Yarns we’ve reviewed that suit it: Lion Brand Basic Stitch Anti-Pilling yarn, Lion Brand Heartland yarn, Lion Brand Wool-Ease worsted yarn. For the hook, choose by size and handle.
Yarn estimate: the 5,208 double crochets at about 8 cm of medium yarn each come to about 420 m, and the edge and ties about 20 m more. Divide by the meters on your yarn label for the number of balls, and buy them from one dye lot.
This pattern has about 5,556 stitches with the edge row. For a closer figure in your own yarn, weigh what you have made once a good part is done, divide by the stitches made so far, multiply by 5,556 and divide by the ball weight on the label. Taller stitches use more yarn than short ones, so allow a margin.
Finished size and gauge
At about 13 double crochets and 7 rows per 10 cm, the 24 stitches of Row 1 leave a center hole about 6 cm across, and each row adds about 3 cm to the width, so 28 rows make a skirt about 85 cm across. Stop sooner for a small tree or keep going for a bigger one. These are calculations from the counts, not a measured sample.
The gauge calculator compares your swatch with the pattern. A stitch name you do not know is in the abbreviation chart; a UK pattern’s names are in the US/UK term reference.
The pattern
Count rows for this patternThe center
- Chain 26. Row 1: double crochet in the third chain from the hook and in each chain across: 24 stitches. The skipped chains do not count. Do not join the ends: the gap between them becomes the slit.
- Row 2: chain 2 and turn (it does not count). [1 double crochet in the next stitch, 2 double crochets in the next stitch] 12 times: 36.
- Row 3: chain 2 and turn. [1 double crochet in each of the next 2 stitches, 2 double crochets in the next stitch] 12 times: 48.
- Row 4: chain 2 and turn. [1 double crochet in the next stitch, 2 double crochets in the next stitch, 1 double crochet in each of the next 2 stitches] 12 times: 60.
- Row 5: chain 2 and turn. [1 double crochet in each of the next 4 stitches, 2 double crochets in the next stitch] 12 times: 72.
Grow it to size
- Each later row adds 12 stitches the same way: one more plain stitch in every repeat, with the increase at the end of the repeat on odd rows and near its middle on even rows, so the edge stays round. Row 10 has 132 stitches, Row 20 has 252 and Row 28 has 348.
- Lay the skirt flat every few rows. It should lie flat, with the two slit edges straight; if it ruffles, a row has more than 12 increases, and if it cups, one is missing.
Edge and ties
- Edge row: chain 1 and turn (it does not count), single crochet in each stitch: 348. Do not fasten off.
- First tie: chain 31, slip stitch in the second chain from the hook and in each chain back: 30 slip stitches. Fasten off.
- Make 5 more ties the same way, joining the yarn to the slit edge: one at the outer corner of the other edge, and a pair halfway along the slit and at the center hole, one on each side. Tie them in bows around the tree stand.
Check the work
Row n has 12n + 12 stitches: 24, 36, 48, 60, 72 and so on to 348 in Row 28. The skirt lies flat with straight slit edges.
- If the skirt ruffles, count the last row: it should have only 12 more stitches than the row below.
- If it cups into a bowl, an increase was missed; also check that the chain 2 at the start of each row is not worked into.
- If the slit edges curve, work the first and last stitch of every row into the very end stitches.
